""When the governor signed the bill into law he said it would play an important part in our aggressive efforts to prevent minors from purchasing cigarettes on the Internet," Kevin Quinn, a spokesman for the governor, said yesterday. "
So how are minors getting credit cards to buy stuff online?
"Quinn also acknowledged that it's a way for the state to protect the tax revenue it gets from sales of cigarettes in stores and other establishments within New York's borders. He said the state expects to take in just under $1 billion from the taxes this year. "
There is the real reasoning. Greedy bastards.
All you poor smokers up in NY just move on down to GA or AL. We'll southernize you and you'll be in better company. I think these greedy NY officials need a good freep.

But backers of the law, including Gov. George Pataki, who first proposed the measure, view it as another way to keep minors from buying cigarettes. "When the governor signed the bill into law he said it would play an important part in our aggressive efforts to prevent minors from purchasing cigarettes on the Internet," Kevin Quinn, a spokesman for the governor, said yesterday. They can't even be HONEST about their motivations. It's ALL about revenue, and has NOTHING to do with youth smoking.
We're turning into a really pathetic country when a state is so dependent on revenue that they'd go to these extremes. It's no longer about the consumer, or about choice, or about anything other than what Daddy Government wants. And it's only going to get worse.

And he said credit card companies have told his organization they do not like pro-tobacco advocates saying minors do not have credit cards because they try to market cards to children.
Oh really, marketing like hell to a segment of society that can't legally be held to a contract? (Correct me if I'm wrong...)

New York is acting like a dictator state these days. What gives them the right to do this? I am just appalled at the loss of personal freedom they have.

Does this law disallow one from looking up a website and then phoning in or mailing in an order for those products advertised on the internet site?
