April 25, 2003 -- Foster parents who smoke will undergo extra scrutiny before the city places kids in their homes, the head of the child-welfare agency said yesterday. The latest development in Mayor Bloomberg's crusade against smoking came even as the city announced a plan to recruit more foster parents.

OK, let me get this straight: The City of New York will certify any kind of whacko to be a foster parent -- and they do; just read the paper every once in a while -- but it is concerned about whether or not prospective foster parents SMOKE?

These people are sick.

Regards,

I still care, this is the story I was referencing in the other thread. Incredible.

She Lion, I don't always agree with your posts but I have to say there are times when bureaucrats are beyond insane in their priorities. This is one of those times.

Now do you see where I am coming from concerning smoker's rights?

The sick thing about all of this is: these lawmakers are voted INTO office! We, the people, vote these people into office.

I bet these same lawmakers would welcome the VOTE from the smokers, though, don't you?

Yes, I usually do and agree with many of your points on rights such as Tavern and Restaurant owners having the right to allow people to smoke if they so choose because, after all, it's supposed to be their business. That's why I pinged you to this thread. This kind of thinking is ridiculous and should play no factor in providing a home for foster children.

There are some things you've said about smoking I disagree with, but that's another subject.

This is hysterical.

Many of my generation smoked liked mad before, during, and after pregancy and we were the baby-boomer parents. I think we did a pretty good job.

Since smoking rates have gone down kids have more asthma, allergies and the condition ADHD than any other time in recent history.

Maybe they should look for foster parents that smoke.

Bell pointed out that central Harlem - where a significant number of children come into the foster-care system - also has the highest asthma rate in the city.

Smoking and Asthma has no connection, take a look at the poluted outside air.

Blooming has flipped his lid.

You know, the more I think about this, the more frosted I become.

These are children that are coming from the very WORST homes imaginable. They are beaten, assaulted, and neglected in every way, but my husband and I would not be considered "fit" foster parents because there is smoking in the home???

They truly have gone quite mad.

As you may or may not know, I am in the process of handing my state senator his head on a platter over this state-wide smoking ban. He can't understand why I feel like the government is trying to marginalize smokers. I plan to take this article in for his perusal.
