Agreement Reached on Suffolk's Smoking Ban
By Emi Endo
Staff Writer

January 10, 2003

Bar and restaurant owners who had led the fight against a proposed far-reaching smoking ban in Suffolk County have agreed to support the bill if implementation is delayed until 2006. Legis. Brian Foley (D-Blue Point), who sponsored the bill, said he would change the date the law would go into effect for bars and restaurants to Jan. 1, 2006, from the proposed Jan. 1, 2004. New restrictions for bingo halls and office buildings would still take effect that day.

Not as bad as it could have been...the restaurants put up one helluva fight.

Oh, and there's a poll that shows (at this time) over 60% want the entire thing scrapped. I'd appreciate any FReeper help, here.

Regards,

I appreciate your moral support, Flyer!

Thank you!

PS: You can vote in the poll...our idiot politicans seem to think polls are what should be the driving force behind legislation -- NOT the Constitution, so...vote away, Flyer & who cares if you're in Texas!

vote away

There wasn't an option for my real opinion, so I suggested they scrap it. Good luck, we have to hang together.

#1....... But it's only delayed, is it not going to be just as restrictive, whenever it takes effect. ?

Could you hyperlink the poll site, please.

Oh, it'll be restrictive as hell...but not as restrictive as NYC's or Nassau County's. Outdoor cafes are restricted but not outlawed, and catering halls and restaurants are OK for private functions.

The whole text is attached to the link to the article.

I'm hoping for a huge backlash. Suffolk County has the opportunity to take advantage of an enormous windfall here as Nassau County smokers (and their friends) pour over the border. They would be foolish indeed to not take advantage of the other legislatures' idiocy.

Business owners and Suffolk county say they have reached an agreement on a bill to ban smoking in all county workplaces. The solution? Delaying the implementation by two years. Do you agree?

8.3%
Yes (150 responses)

25.5%
No (460 responses)

65.6%
Scrap the bill entirely (1183 responses)

0.6%
Unsure (11 responses)

I know what you mean, Flyer...I myself support only one law of this type. It would read something like this: "All businesses are required to post their smoking policies clearly at the entrance."

And that's about all that SHOULD be required.

Regards,
