Despite many disappointments at the statewide level, California ProLife Council is pleased that there were modest gains in the California Assembly and in the California Congressional delegation.
With the addition of a new congressional district, we increased our pro-life representation by one, electing Devin Nunes to the 21st Congressional District. And in the Assembly we added two pro-life members with the election of George Plescia in Assembly district 75 and Greg Aghazarian in District 26. Two others who hold stronger pro-life convictions than the members they replaced, John Benoit in AD 64 and Shirley Horton in AD 78. All pro-life incumbents held their seats and other pro-life vacancies were filled with legislators who will vote pro-life. At the local level, many candidates who defend innocent human life won the vote of the people, including former Speaker of the Assembly, Curt Pringle, who was elected Mayor of Anaheim.
At least a couple of pro-life candidates are in races too close to call. Their success in the pending count of absentee ballots or recounts would increase these victories. They are Jeff Denham in Senate District 12, and Tom McClintock in the race for Controller.
Nationally pro-life candidates did very well. A number of new pro-life women were elected to Congress including Elizabeth Dole (R-NC), Katherine Harris (R-FL), Candice Miller (R-MI), Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO), and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN). In Maines 2nd congressional district a pro-life Democrat, Mike Michaud defeated a pro-abortion Republican.
Pro-lifers held onto or won a number of Senate seats including eight of the ten most watched racesMinnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, South Carolina, and Colorado. And the South Dakota Senate race is so close it may still go pro-life.
In contrast, EMILYs List, the pro-abortion political action committee, did very poorly, losing 17 of their top 22 races.
In the hot Missouri Senate race, which sends the pro-life former congressman, Jim Talent, to the U.S. Senate, 17% of the voters responding to a FOX News Election Day poll, ranked abortion as the single most important issue in deciding their vote. Of those, 80% voted for Jim Talent.
Two-thirds of the newly elected House members are pro-life. For these candidates, and many others who did not waiver on their pro-life positions in California and elsewhere, the pro-life issue was a winning issue.

Then again, on the upside, the Republican CA statewide candidate with the highest number of votes was the most conservative one on the ballot of all our GOP candidates, Tom McClintock for Controller.
Who are those "Catholics"? There are many who are in name only who wouldn't know who the current Pope is.
Wow. You'd never know that from Katie Couric or Peter Jennings.
