Restaurants Fighting Proposed Smoking Ordinance
Date: October 21, 2002 Source: KRQE News 13 / AP Location: Albuquerque, N.M.
About 100 bar and restaurant owners are opposing a measure that would ban smoking in bars and all sections of restaurants in Albuquerque. The owners gathered yesterday at an Albuquerque nightclub, vowing to fight the proposal.
They contend the proposal is unconstitutional. They also allege they'd lose customers to restaurants, bars and casinos outside Albuquerque.
A number of groups have been pushing for the ban in Albuquerque. Those groups include the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and the American Lung Association.
In 1998-99, the restaurants owners in other states didn't think they had any recourse. Finally, today, they see that they DO have recourse, and they aren't going to take this anymore.
Too many businesses across the US are floundering and going out of business. The ones today see that and do not want to go down the jolly green trail for a special interest group with only one goal in mind: control, restrict and ban the smokers!
Guess what!
These special interest groups could care less about the hurting economy. Their one and only goal is to ban smokers. Come hell or high water, that is their goal.
I'm not sure that this is the way to go with this. It's something to try though.
