COPS held a press conference this morning and produced photographs of Davis accepting the check in his govt office in Sacramento. Apparently you can actually read the amount on the check.

On the date in question, South said, Davis met with Angele and other COPS leaders in Davis' Los Angeles campaign office, where the future governor legally accepted a contribution.

So the photo allows us to differentiate between his state capitol office (fundraising - naughty) and his campaign office (fundraising - okay). Is that the gist? I imagine some further digging around could locate itineraries from that date showing whether Davis was in Sacramento or LA (or both).
