Will Phoenix Smoke Out Tobacco?
09/18/2002

By 3TV and azfamily.com staff

An anti-tobacco group is urging Phoenix lawmakers to follow in the footsteps of Tempe and ban smoking. In May, Tempe voters passed an ordinance banning smoking in all public places including bars and restaurants.

According to The Arizona Republic, a newly formed group plans to meet with Mayor Skip Rimsza and Phoenix city officials. The group says it will try to persuade the city to pass a similar ordinance.

If that doesn’t work, it will get a petition started and try to get it on the ballot.

Phoenix city council members say if the measure came to a vote, it would not pass.

They are doing the same thing in Missouri.
It wouldn't pass in the legislature, they tried to get the signatures to get it on a ballot, they couldn't get the correct signatures in the correct districts, they sued, the judge gave it to them.
I've got a special edition of my tobacco newsletter out as we speak.

I heard about what happened in Missouri.

There are times when I am happy the state of Delaware does not have ballot initiative. Unfortunately though it is easier to convince 61 members of the legislature than it is to get enough signatures.

No win situation for our side, sometimes.

Oh yeah, that'll be great for the tourist industry. Ummhmmm, that's just the ticket.

Why can't these public places just announce whether they are smoking or non-smoking and let the public decide where to go?

Then there would be no intervention from the ANTI'S! And the anti's wouldn't be making any MONEY!
