As I surfed through the news channels and C-SPAN this morning I heard a report that cigarette sales in New York City in July were down 50%.

I assume that they meant "legal sales". Ha Ha Ha Ha

Exactly. The guys who smuggle drugs, girls, boys, jewels, whiskey, illegal immigrants, etc. are being given a golden (or Federal Reserve Noten) opportunity to move in.

Well Indiana residents don't benefit as a whole so almost nobody cares.

The residents of ANY state do not benefit as a whole, even though the residents who smoke pay 100% into the cigarette taxes!

I will be posting what the smokers paid into Indiana in 2001 soon, so keep your eye out.

Just an excerpt from Indiana:

Smokers Pay Excise Taxes
$ 114,849,575

Smokers Pay Sales Taxes
$ 111,144,750

Smokers Pay Tobacco Settlement Payments
$ 126,100,000

For a total of:

$ 352,094,325

Smokers switch to other drugs because they will be cheaper and no tax is generated.

"Two years later, they repealed the tax."

With the plan to increase the tax again, a little more slowly so people wouldn't notice, they have managed to increase the price to $52 pr carton, pipe tobacco is now $64 for 300 grams.

Oh, how I love to see that, the powers that be however will claim that 50% of smokers quit. :-}

Not the smokers in THIS house! We have NO interest in drugs. I have been rolling our own for over a year now, and can roll a beautiful carton for UNDER $8 dollars!!

And by not feeding the state coffers is really sweet!!!

Not quite yet.... from here.

Cigarette sales in New York plummeted almost 50 percent in July after the city raised the tax on each pack from 8 cents to $1.50, according to new figures from the city's department of finance.

New Yorkers purchased 15.6 million cigarette packs last month, down from 29.2 million packs in July 2001. But because the tax was so much higher, millions more tax dollars poured into city coffers -- $12.3 million, compared to $2.3 million during the same period last year.

The new tax, which Mayor Michael Bloomberg supported to help close a record budget gap, drove the price of some name brands to more than $7 per pack.

There are no studies yet to determine whether New Yorkers are quitting smoking or simply taking other avenues to fix their nicotine cravings, such as online mail order buys or trips out of town.

I can do it for less than $4/carton(with a variety of blends to match the mood I feel like, cough, cough, excuse me, I think I better roll the next one lighter).
