[history]
It mentions Simon's declaration during a primary campaign stop that he is "an oil and gas man from way back." Simon made the remark to an energy executive during a tour of an oil drilling research facility at Lawrence Livermore Laboratories.

Simon's financial investments and holdings he has substantial sums invested in firms connected to oil exploration. So doesn't Boxer--blind trust my a$$...must research on FR

We Republicans in CA were hoping that Davis, weakened by campaign financing, energy policy and other issues could be defeated. I'm afraid that last week's civil judgment against Simon's company for fraud puts those chances in peril.
I know, I know, Simon wasn't even named as a defendant and asserts that he did not make the investment decisions that led to the judgment, but in a heavy democrat state it was going to be a tough battle in any event. Now it may be an impossible battle, I'm sorry to say.

Is there a law in California that demands all conservatives quit before the fight starts? Davis has high unapproval numbers, don`t quit , the fights still on.

Joe, Are there any clean candidates left? Any that haven't had failings?
Somehow, though all the mud of the last week, I believe Simon is a good man. That's all that matters to me.
I only have to look at Davi$ and his accomplishments.. For shame.. He had it ALL and has frittered it away patronizing unions and special interests. I'm tired of "Bu$ine$$ as Usual" if that is what you what to call it.
I want better then that for this state. We the People deserve better and must demand it.
To: NormsRevenge
what you what=want to call it.

You wimp. You see one set of press releases and you crumple! What a lark. You're no conservative. You're a lib.
To: NormsRevenge
Darn right!
Tell the Davis people to look at the donor line of the Sec. State database.

"That's the way we see it." Yes. I suppose things do have a certain distorted appearence when you have your heads up your a$$es.

You guys can attack JoeFromCa all you want, but it's my opinion some of these charges leveled at Simon are very damaging. Do I agree with the charges? Not necessarily. Do I want Davis to win? No. The fact is that most of the public aren't going to tune in to the meaty issues until after schools starts. For now all they are going to do is form an initial opinion of Simon. My take is that the court decision from last week is going to hurt him. Hey, I'd like to be wrong.
To: NormsRevenge
Where did Joe state he didn't want Simon to win?

"My take is that the court decision from last week is going to hurt him."
I think D1's right about that, but these next couple of weeks will also tell something about Simon and the Cal GOP in general. What I'm trying to say is that we knew that Davis would fight dirty going into it. There are always setbacks in a campaign, and the real test of a candidate's (and a campaign's) mettle is when the chips are down.
To use a sporting analogy, a great boxer will keep going, even after taking some hard shots, and more than one fight has changed direction after the third round. I've got to bet on this campaign -- think of the consequences of losing this election. Property rights? The last vestige is hanging by a thread already. Taxes? You KNOW where Davis will take that. More state funding for killing unborn babies, the final triumph of the "gay" agenda etc. etc. etc. Oh, and, please turn in those nasty guns while you're at it.
D1 is also right about something else. I don't see where JoeFromCA said he wanted Davis to win, or Simon to lose, either.

Now it may be an impossible battle, I'm sorry to say. Gosh, I'm absolutely shocked to find negative tones and defeatism here on FR. Especially on a Simon thread. You must be truly lonely. < / sarcasm >
Just think if you had put the energy used into lamenting Simon's chances into writing him a check, or picking up the phone and volunteering for his campaign.
Naaaaaahhh, too much effort, right?
I'll take comfort from the fact that the guy who can't possibly beat Grayout Davis has led in nine of eleven polls. Yet "supporters" like you buy into the "objective" media's take on things.

For now all they are going to do is form an initial opinion of Simon. My take is that the court decision from last week is going to hurt him. And my response to that is "So what?" Should everyone just adopt Joe's defeatism and give up? There's no evidence of a drop in support (via polls) yet, if any will even occur. President Bush hasn't pulled back from his scheduled fundraiser. So whatever damage last week may or may not have done, folks need to press forward and keep the faith. These emotional rollercoasters (I'm not referring to you here) are simply a waste of energy. They remind me vividly of all manic depression during the summer of 2000. Every good Bush poll or article evoked celebration and high fives, while a subsequent pro Gore poll/article brought out the naysayers and handwringers.
Stay the course. Grayout Davis is a seriously wounded incumbent.

"Hey, I'd like to be wrong."
We'll Give You a Chance at being wrong on this one :-) !
It would appear Simon has been inflicted with mortal wounds by the most recent happenings in a courtroom in SoCal. Im not so sure.
GraYouT does not exactly look like a the toughest guy in town either. He seems to be on edge of late. I wonder why? DioXin, MTBE,Oracle, to name a few are issues he will be asked about in debates in front of potential voters. How is GraYouT's espanol these days.
Simon doesn;t have much left to hide at this point .. Im not so sure about Davi$.

I downloaded and played Grayout's latest commercial from his web site.
First - and I say this affectionately, without malice - you're all idiots! What does this commercial mean? It means that Grayout, after all this time and effort, still has no confidence in his base. In fact, it means that the one-two punch of a strong Green Party candidate (who even likes Simon!) and Simon's moderate stands on the environment, is working.
The other thing it means is that Davis is continuing the negative strategy he has been using since the start, even though it's been increasing his own negatives faster than anything else.
Now, there's no doubt we've been dealt a setback, and a significant one. I'm sure Davis and South are cackling evilly in their lair about the possibilities surrounding the debacle. Just remember that at the same time they're trying to increase people's doubts, they will increase their negatives, too. Of course this is normally how negative campaigns work, but in this case there's an unusual added twist: Gray Davis' negatives are already so high that every increase in them greatly endangers his campaign.
It's downright dumb to give up on Simon just because he's received a setback or two. So has Davis. Both candidates are imperfect men, just like you and me. But that doesn't mean we don't know which one would be better for California, no?

To: DoughtyOne
Although the issue can stick, the issue WON'T stick if you are really campaigning on fact. In all reality, the DNC has excellent psychological warfare tactics. This non-issue was MADE an issue by the propaganda popping out of the LA times and other newspapers. The TV, Radio, and Print media are teeing up balls for the governor to hit.
Small wonder.
When the top soft money donors to Gray Davis' campaign are media outfits, is there any question why their "employees" march to a liberal drum?
To: daviddennis
Speaking of idiots, how did you possibly lump me in with those who have given up on Simon?
