Dr. James C. Dobson, president of Focus on the Family, responded today to reports citing Dr. Julie Gerberding as the new head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
"We are baffled as to why President Bush would appoint someone so out of step with his stated priorities. Dr. Gerberding has been in positions of leadership in the CDC for years, but there is nothing in the record to indicate her opposition to 'safe-sex' ideology. She has no apparent concern about the ineffectiveness of condom usage, nor any stated disagreement with the positions of the homosexual activist movement, or with the provision of free needles to drug users. To the contrary, her writings clearly show that she believes the 'safe sex' lie that has entrapped millions of our teenagers -- many of whom are now fighting incurable sexually transmitted diseases.
"The president campaigned on a policy of morality and ethics in government, and yet he is now asking us to hope that Dr. Gerberding's policies will be consistent with those promises. We are reminded of the assurances given to conservatives that Justice David Souter would not lean radically to the left. But by the time the truth was disclosed, it was too late to oppose his confirmation for the Supreme Court.
"This new appointment sends a disturbing message that the problems surrounding rampant sexual behavior can be solved with a false promise and a piece of latex. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is already the world's largest promoter of homosexuality and 'safe-sex' programs, and now the president has appointed someone whose positions indicate that the organization will continue dishing out more of the same.
"America needs a bold, proven leader who will help undo the damage the 'safe-sex' message has created. Dr. Gerberding is not that person. We hope President Bush will consider the potentially harmful message this appointment is sending regarding the issue of sexuality."
James C. Dobson, Ph.D. is a child psychologist, author, radio broadcaster and the president of Focus on the Family. Founded in 1977, Focus on the Family is a nonprofit Christian organization committed to strengthening the family in the U.S. and throughout the world.
Blackmail is a crime. If you have evidence of a criminal act then you should report it to the proper authorities.
Julie Gerberding started as an AIDS doc in SF in the bad old days. I suspect she has left-wing sympathies.
But I don't know, and the reason I don't know is that she's a doctor, not a politician. I am appalled that Dobson would bash Bush and oppose a highly qualified nominee over what he thinks her politics may be.
the most reasonable comment on this thread.
If anyone wants to look at the big picture, Dobson has been (and I am sure will be) a big support of President Bush. It is important that he speak up when he thinks Bush made a bad decision. He represents millions of people like me who want the President to hear our disappointment. That's the way our free society works.
Do I want someone to head the CDC that is an expert on communicable diseases and knows how to manage the scientific organization OR do I want someone whose chief qualifications are they are anti-gay, anti-sex education and a Christian? That's an easy choice for most people. Why is it so hard for Dobson to figure out?
Now exactly what does "the" conservative agenda entail? Frankly Dobson doesnt represent the conservative agenda for most conservatives.
Well that's just a terrific example to follow.
what good is it to have a two party system if when your party is "in" you can't pick your appointments according to their political views?
I have been critical of Bush on many occasions and consider him to be, other than 9/11 and related matters a mediocre President so far. Political considerations in appointments are reasonable, but the head of the CDC or other scientific agencies should be chosen on their qualifications in the field, not their politics, IMO.
No, I don't think we all wanna be like Clinton&co.
I bet you're wrong. Clinton could probably have cared less what their views were. He just wanted the power and the fun of being the Head of State and Top Dog. His leftwing flunkies made the appointments and Clinton signed off on them. Clinton didnt care about a liberal agenda, he didnt care about the country, he just cared about ... Clinton.
I just think, in this particular appointment, her politics will effect procedure and therefore matter. Especially to someone like Dobson (who speaks for people like me). If he doesn't like it he has the freedom to say so. The idea that all Republican's should walk in lockstep whether they agree with a decision or not is appalling to me. Dobson compliments Bush all the time and attacking him for his differences will not aid Bush in the least.
The "Centers for Disease Control and Prevention" needs to be dismantled and started over from scratch.
The CDC is as bad as WHO.
Dave, Sick Willie's appointments were either proposed or vetted by Her Royal Heinous, Hitlery Rotten Clitoon.
I'm serious, he didn't make any appointments without her OK. The flunkies weren't suggesting appointments; they just trembled in their boots when she was around.
Dobson compliments Bush all the time. He likes Bush for the most part. But Dobson has the right to point out where he differs with Bush. Dobson's voice represents my voice and so I am very appreciative. Conservatives may not always agree on everything and it is important to remember the big picture. At the same time we should not require lockstep following of leadership at the expense of our own consciences.
Hopefully that's clearer.
And me.
You're probably right. I would be trembling with that Hillary witch looking over my shoulder. My point though was I dont think Bill Clinton, himself, could have cared less who was in those slots. Now his wife is a different animal. She is an an extreme partisan Liberal.
