Dan Walters: Davis' re-election proving to be tougher than it should have been

Culbert Olson's political career was marked by two milestones. He was the first Democrat to be elected governor of California in the 20th century and the last governor to be denied a second term.

Olson's 1942 defeat at the hands of Republican Earl Warren culminated several years of declining popularity -- most tellingly among his fellow Democrats -- capped by a widespread belief that he had bungled a serious state budget crisis.

Simon can't match Davis dollar for dollar, unless he's willing to dip further into his private fortune; he and his strategists appear to be husbanding their resources for a slugfest in the last few weeks of the campaign, hoping that media coverage of the budget crisis, Oracle and other matters will continue to tarnish Davis' image and keep him in the zone of vulnerability.

...as he seeks re-election ....Davis confronts two Olsonlike problems: unpopularity,
including a substantial erosion in his own party, and an immense budget crisis.....

A-a-a-a-h. Music to my ears. Play it again, Sam.

He better not "husband his resources" unless he wants to get his ass kicked by a constant drumbeat of negative ads over the coming months.

Bob Dole got creamed by early, non-stop advertizing by Willie. In that case, Dole didn't have the money to respond. Simon has plenty, and better damn well use it.

Actually, I don't think Simon should do a thing unless Davis' ads start impacting his negatives. The fact is, Davis' negatives are so high that Davis HAS to start campaigning this early to try and convince people he's done a good job when, in fact, everyone knows he hasn't.

There's also something else to consider: the hit against Simon has been torn apart by the LIBERAL media who have said that Davis has "misstated the facts" (you and I would call it a lie). Davis is called to the carpet for the very first hit ad ... losing credibility on the next ad. (There he goes again).

The fact is, people are just not focused on the campaign now. It's true. People are focused on DAVIS and how much they dislike him. They are going to be focused on DAVIS and the hole he ran California into financially over the next two months. We're not going to have a budget on time ... or even a few days late. It's going to be very, very late. Republicans aren't going to cave on taxes, and Democrats won't cut health programs.

It's going to be an interesting summer.

Needless to say, Simon SHOULD just quietly sit, working the grassroots, getting out to the communities, and let Davis take a beating. IF Davis' numbers start climbing THEN Simon can come out with both guns. Right now, it's a waste of money and would not do a damn thing to change the November election.
