LOS ANGELES (AP) - The first attack ad of the general election campaign is hitting the airwaves -- an assault by Democratic Gov. Gray Davis against Republican Bill Simon's business record.

The ad launched Monday comes on the heels of two positive television ads Davis began airing last week. Simon, a political newcomer whose fund-raising is dwarfed by Davis' more than $30 million campaign treasury, has yet to run television commercials -- considered key to reaching voters in sprawling California.

The problem for Davis is that when your own negatives are sky high, running negative ads tends to backfire. Only when a candidate is thought to be a "good guy," can he get away with a certain amount of going negative.

Thanks for the link. I thought the SacBee article was devastating to Davis. This Mercury News article, OTOH, is turgid and unreadable. I can't imagine that a single reader will get through it and understand the point.

"The federal judge presiding over the Western Fed case granted a summary judgment motion in March finding the government liable for a contract breach."

So, Simon is right, it was the governments' fault, not mis-management. Sounds like Dim-bulb Davis is trying to blow smoke up our @$$...AGAIN!

The Davis strategy is easy to anticipate and would be fairly easy to defeat.

California is 60/40 Democrat. That means that Simon must get 100 percent of his base and 17 percent of Davis's base to win. Davis on the other hand needs zero Republicans and only 84 percent of his own Democratic base to win.

In a liberal state with a very failed Democratic governor, the Republican has only one thing going for him. He is not the corrupt Democrat.

The Democrat's best stratetgy is to say, yes that Pubbie is at least as corrupt as me. That Republican is just like me only Conservative. If Davis can just get back 4 percent of the Democrats that are currently for Simon, Davis can win.

To do that he will constantly attack Simon with charges. If Simon responds with I am not guilty, he will lose. Simon says hey I am not guilty, I sued the governement and they may lose the case. Bla bla bla. That will not work. That is right up their with Nixon saying "I am not a crook." Say "I am not guilty" and 50 percent of the people will believe you are guilty. Davis only needs 4 percent of the Democrats to believe that.

What the Democrats will get out of that is that Simon was involved in something and he is in court. He may beat the rap, but he is in court. Guys in court over failed banks are pretty much crooks is what most democrats will believe. That will make Simon as bad as Davis. That is Davis's object. When the Republican is bad like the Democrat, the Democrat wins. When ever a Democrat can get a fight started with a Republcian in a Democrat state the Democrat wins. Democrats when attacked side with Democrats. You have to lure the Democrats away. You can not attack them to your side.

There is zero way that Simon could lose his base. The problem is how does he hold 17 percent of the democrats. Can you imagine a Bill Clinton were accused of making bad loans and failing a bank that lost 90 million?

Picture Bill with a tear in his eye.

Those people came to me. They needed money. I
know I was too easy. But these people needed
money. I felt their pain and I loaned them the
money. I was pretty sure they could pay it back. I
couln't' turn my back on them. But the things
failed they couldn't pay it back. The bank failed.
Some say it was the govenrments fault. But I can't
lie to you. I made loans to people that a cold
hearted banker should have turned down.

Gray Davis thinks that is evil. And if you think
helping people with loans is evil, then I'm evil.
If I am elected governor, I will try to help people
that need help. If you want a man with a cold eye
and a cold heart I am not your man.

If you want a man who would forclose on his mother,
then Gray davis might just be your man. He thinks I
should have. But helping people is what I want to
do. I lost millions of my own money trying to do it.
I guess that makes me evil in some people's eyes.

That is how Bill Clinton would handle this accusation. And after he got through wiping his eyes. 100 percent of the Democrats would vote for Bill Clinton even if Bill Clinton were running as a Conservative Democrat.

If Simon were smart enough to try to get Democratic votes he might win. Instead he will tell people how the lost 90 million was not his fault and a judge may say it was not his fault. The fault is in dispute... bla bla bla That is about as bright as O.J. saying he is out looking for the killer.

Simon to win must get 17 percent of the Democrats to vote for him.

What do you say to a Democrat to get him to vote for Simon, besides "Simon ain't Davis"? What do you do when Davis says Simon is just like me .... only worse?

When a Republican gets into a Yes you are! No I'm not! debate it always results in an almost even split. Spliting the up the "up for grabs" Democrat vote will give Davis the election.

Republicans can only win in Democrat states when they say things that Democrats want to hear.

I hope Simon sidelines those darn RINOS who are denying him the bucks for TV. Ornery RINOS would like to see
him defeated (like the pro-life Repub guv candidate in NJ. In that race one of the RINOS actually worked for the Dem.)

Hmmm! That is tough reasoning to follow for us conservatives.

Something about Davis is IMHO very reminiscent of Gary Condit. They send off the same creepy vibrations.

Is anybody as amazed and shocked as I am that the press is actually doing some objective journalism with these analyses (the Sac Bee here, AP elsewhere). I mean, the analyst as working as though there is such a thing as objective truth, that it is discoverable, that it can be shared with and understood by other human beings and can be used for rational decision making.

Maybe the analsyst never attended journalsim school and has never heard Peter Jennings speak about the trade....
