California's gubernatorial sweepstakes is turning into a neck-and-neck race, according to a recent spate of polls that show embattled Democratic Gov. Gray Davis right alongside new kid Republican challenger Bill Simon.
More important -- those same confidential polls show half the state's voters giving him a thumbs-down on his job performance.

Bump for two California Patriots - Our JimRob and Bill Simon!

Davis's first attack ad has already backfired. The SacBee tore into it as false advertising. See the post earlier today about the ad trying to link Simon to an S&L failure.

I have something in common with California, Davis turns me off too.

Maybe this will end the references to the 14-point lead in the poll taken by Davis' people.

Davis's problem is that a candidate with high negatives of his own can't go into negative attacks against his opponent without seeming desperate and mean.

Bill Simon is a nice man and it shows. Now you will get to see if he is as tough as he is nice (like RR).

Even the LA Times isn't biting - it hit the front page, and Simon's "Being a director doesn't make me a manager" rebuttal was right there. Turning to the continuation page didn't get any better for Davis.
Isn't a $12 million ad buy a huge gamble for Davis? He has something like $45 million, so that's a healthy percentage of his total war chest. He'd better watch out, or he'll piss away his whole budget long before the election.
I suppose even his fundraising may be in danger at this rate, since if he looks like a poor candidate, the fat cats will stop giving him money. Therefore he has to lash out now, before things get worse. Well, it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Let's see: a conservative GOP candidate in a DEAD HEAT in a liberal Rat state? Naaah. Gerald Parsky and the RINOs will say something is wrong with the picture. After all we all know a GOP candidate is not supposed to win here unless he is to the LEFT of the Rat candidate like the much touted Richard Riordan supported by the party bigwigs. Except a funny thing happened to the RINO on the way to the inevitable coronation: a whopping 18 points LOSS. Will history repeat itself in November? One thing is sure: Bill Simon is no political novice and even the liberal media has realized it just can't write him out of the script yet. Good bye Field poll!!!

Simon should keep it real simple. "It is about the budget, stupid"
The FACT is that Davis has presided over a massive shift from a surplus to a huge deficit. Davis' fault Davis' Fault Davis' fault. Say it over and over and over.
Simon is a businessman. He will do better do better do better. say it over and over.
