To understand the fund-raising scandals that are engulfing the Davis administration, one needs to understand an anecdote shared on National Public Radio recently by Dan Walters, the Sacramento Bee columnist whose pieces regularly appear on these pages.

Back when Gray Davis was an assemblyman, Mr. Walters asked him which politician he most admired. The answer was U.S. Sen. Alan Cranston. Was it because of his principles? Nope. Mr. Davis was impressed that Cranston spent a portion of every day dialing for campaign dollars.

Wow! Somebody should add the story about the School Union excuse me State Education Association and how it is writing a storngly worded letter about how it has for years supported people (i.e. democrats) and in this year of budget crisis expects a return on its investment and how it will hold people accountable.

I guess the bottom line is that in California one needs to really buy one's politicians. I guess that is why the Democrats when they chant Enron, expect to find some huge smoking financial guns aimed at Bush and Cheney. Democrats regularly take money from special interests to allow folks to provide input, and they just assume that Republicans are the same way. I think that is why the Demo's don't have a clue about Republicans.

Yep. I'd like to see some fresh poll numbers.

No need. Every major media outlet says that Davis is leading all polls by double digits. :-) No reason to doubt them.

Ahhh, yes. The Bay Area based Field's poll. 534 self-dubbed "likely" voters. Of a month ago. Simon should concede today. ;^)

All of this "pay to play" stuff has been an open 'secret' about Davis from day one. I wonder why it didn't matter to the newspapers until the idiotic Oracle deal came to light?

And yet despite the blatent bribery and extortion by the good governor, the Chronicle, Times, Mercury-News, Bee et al will overwhelmingly endorse him for another four years.

I believe every private poll (meaning, every poll released that ISN'T the Field Poll) show Simon up by 2-6 points. The faulty Field Poll notwithstanding, SIMON AND DAVIS ARE NECK-AND-NECK and Simon is very likely ahead by any reasonable measure. The press only tout the Field Poll because they want to demoralize our voters and convince Simon that he's too conservative, in the hopes that he'll flip on an issue, and then they (and Davis) will jump all over him for flipping, and he'll lose because conservatives will bail and independents will see him as untrustworthy.

I think that Simon has the principles and courage to hold fast and steady in the face of ever-increasing pressure to tilt left.

We need to let him know we, conservatives, support him and are doing everything we can to get him elected. Email him through the website at <a href="http://www.simonforgovernor.com>Simon For Governor and tell him we appreciate him standing up for basic moral values, no taxes, sane responsible government, gun owners, and for the unborn and elderly who can't speak for themselves.
Davis is in jeopardy. Every scandal pushes people away from him. We need to rally around Simon and bring him to the finish line. But it won't be easy. Davis will lie, cheat and steal to maintain power because THAT IS ALL HE HAS.

I'm sure the race is over and all the nervous nellies and doubters say Bill Simon should concede. Remember all those polls that showed Al Gore ahead? We should take comfort in knowing its not over til the fat lady sings and the only valid poll is the one on election day. Gray Davis' troubles beginning with the Oracle debacle and continuing with his flip flop on tax increases have just begun. Its gonna be a fun summer!
