I cannot, for the life of me, imagine how any sane person could actually vote for Gray Davis. Based on what? His first term has been a disaster. Plus, his unfavorables are at 50%. For an incumbent this should be untenable. I'm also hoping his call for reparations will be his death knell.
GO SIMON!
The Field poll which showed Davis ahead by 14 points is of all adults who choose to answer the telephone. It is not a politically accurate poll, and even that one, tilting to the left as it was, showed Davis's negatives at over 50%.
Simon is ahead. Simon is going to win.
He has a down-home, folksy image, and he carries himself well. Can that survive people knowing he has a house of around 9,000 square feet, or that he can afford a Gulfstream jet?
I gained this insight when I saw his house.
I have a long-standing hobby of being in touch with the local real estate market, and when I typed Simon's name into a search engine and found his address, I couldn't resist checking it out.
It's big. Very big. It looks like you could fit at least three typical homes in it. And it's immaculately maintained, the type of residence you just know has a huge staff making sure it stays that way.
It doesn't make you think of down-home. It makes you think of almost impossible helpings of wealth and power.
I have the impression that this is not an image voters like. They would rather think you have an average suburban place somewhere, instead of your own Gulfstream jet.
I think that's why Simon doesn't want to release his tax returns - and I don't blame him one bit.
Especially since I want him to win.
D
PS If you're curious to see what I mean, yes, I did get a picture; if there's demand, I'll post it when I get home.
As to Simon not releasing his tax returns - I understand that he has filed the required financial disclosure. It's not required to disclose tax returns, but Davis is sure going to make hay on this one.
On the other hand, as long as they keep bashing him for not releasing his tax returns, it keeps them from attacking him for something else. And I don't think many people are going to get excited about this issue. It's pretty boring.
Unfortunately, Republicans have to run against the press as well as the Democrats. If the press were neutral, conservatives would do a lot better.
A few minutes later, a supervisor called back. I said that I would never deal with someone who had not mastered English in a poll. Also, some of the pre lim ?'s had nothing to do with a legitimate poll. She then asked me if I would participate, and I said no and hung up.
During the Clintoon years and when Davis first ran, the Field pollsters would drop my wife, my son or I as soon as we said that were conservative republicans. They would say no thank you and hang up. They did not want to interview very many republicans.
Good call it has already begun.
"...Hours later, Bush joined forces with some of California's wealthiest Republicans for the first of two events expected to raise almost $4 million for gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon, who is trying to unseat Democratic incumbent Gray Davis.
As the glittering crowd arrived at a Los Angeles hotel in a parade of Ferraris, Aston Martins and Rolls Royces, about four dozen protesters demonstrated against Bush's Middle East policies,..."

Does anyone here believe that when Clinton held his fundraisers with Babs Streisand and Steven Spielberg that they drove up in old Buicks? Were they identified in the press as some of California's wealthiest Democrats? Did they glitter? What cars did they drive?
The bias isn't even veiled anymore.
