The high-ranking official takes blame for a disputed state software deal.
SACRAMENTO -- Barry Keene, a ranking member of Gov. Gray Davis' administration and chief of the office that monitors state contracts, abruptly resigned Friday after auditors found that an unprecedented state software contract with Oracle Corp. could cost taxpayers an extra $41 million.

Davis' Republican challenger, Simon, issued a statement calling for a thorough investigation, saying: "Given the administration's reputation for linking policy and fund-raising, and the governor's personal style of micromanagement, I'm not convinced that the buck stops with Mr. Keene."
Oracle donated $25,000 to Davis in June, shortly after the state signed the contract with the firm. It contributed an additional $20,000 to Davis' reelection campaign in February. Logicon is not among Davis' donors. But its parent company, Northrop Grumman, has donated $55,993 to the governor's campaign committee.
Davis Press Secretary Steven Maviglio said "there is absolutely no connection" between donations and the contract, adding: "The people responsible for the contracts would be in no position to know about contributions to the governor, nor should they be. There are no dots to connect."
Whatever you say, Steve. The governor isn't dotty.
I like the Simon statement!

I think they should throw out everything and go get DB2 and get the volume discount.
Hehe, then I could get it for less .
He has been a rat sleaze ball since I have known about him!
How much money have the whores at Whoracle donated to Fascist Davis, the Cal Rats, the Clintoons, and of course the National Rat Party.
May their stock continue to tank and resemble Double Crossing and other rat controlled companies that get business by getting into bed with the politicians.
The school, Bessemer, found that it didn't have anyone trained to use Oracle and therefor needed to spend even more money to retrain its staff on the new system. Someone in the State bureaucracy, however, complained that training money shouldn't be spent on a system that wouldn't interface with the State level system.
That started an investigation that found all sorts of kickbacks and corruption in the Bessemer school district.
Eventually, Oracle was tossed out and a $50,000 administrative software package replaced it. It turns out that the $50k package needed no dedicated training time or expenses, either, plus it was compatible with the State system.
Of course, almost 30% of the Bessemer teachers had to be fired because of the wasted $4 Million, and children's programs had to be cut as well.
But golly, for a year there Bessemer officials could brag that they had the "latest technology" running their schools (into the ground).
Oracle can flat out SELL, people. When a dirt-poor school district can risk the salaries of its teachers for a mere piece of administrative software based on a saleswoman and some fancy buzzwords, you KNOW that someone knows how to make a deal look attractive.
And it sounds as though Gray Davis got sold the same way out in California...
Either Lockhart's incompetence ditched him or maybe there was a stock deal ala McAwful taking place.
yikes , someone got paid off somewhere!
Been my experiance as well. I know of one 'decision maker' who selected Oracle then left to 'work' for oracle at 10 times her pervious pay rate.
The database is at least a solid product, the apps just stink so bad God is holding his nose.
