As a law enforcement officer, 5 cents a bullet is too much for me to bear. The measely 150 rnds the Border Patrol gives me a quarter is not nearly enough to keep me sharp. You can bet, every time some cop blows away an innocent civilian, Perata is going to hear about it. I'm going to paint him in the worst way in every letters to the editor column I can.

"Bullets cause injuries that are expensive to treat and generally speaking, the public is footing the bill."

In reality, it is his drug dealing welfare people who are causing most of these problems.

So lets tax welfare recipients and drug dealers.

"Bullets cause injuries that are expensive to treat and generally speaking, the public is footing the bill."

Automobiles(fatty foods, tobacco, etc) cause injuries that are expensive to treat and generally speaking, the public is footing the bill.

DUH!

Just another backdoor attempt to outlaw guns by making them and/or the ammo so expensive that only rich leftists like Rosie ODonnell can afford to have hired guns to protect herself and her "family".

I'm gald I don't live in CA. Although I don't care for living in MD. either. It won't be long before I'll have to move to a gun friendly state. Any suggestions?

Senator Don Perata is a gun control crusader. But he says his tax idea is not meant to deter gun use, but rather to raise money to save California's hospital trauma centers, some of which are going under.

"For the sake of the ill and helpless."

Can't get gun control? Get ammo control, and the guns are useless.

It's like SUV control. Can't get it? Get the engines out of them.

Commies! They should be charged with treason against the U.S. Constitution and the American people.

"People would go to Oregon, they would go to Nevada and they would load up the trunks of their car or their whole van and bring tons of ammunition in."

... that's not a bad idea, anyway.

If they are going to place a hefty tax on bullets, a prudent person might decide to buy fewer bullets since it costs more.

Our fictional "prudent person" might also decide to maximize the "effectiveness" of those few bullets.

"Bullets cause injuries that are expensive to treat and generally speaking, the public is footing the bill." (Cal. state senator Don Perata, quoted on KTTVU)

It's a damn good thing he hasn't heard of cars or fatty foods yet. (Or was Perata the jerk who proposed a fast-food tax over its fat content causing heart disease?)

Could you imagine what kind of tax Perata would want on cars - over all car-related police, EMT, and hospital costs?

Scandals of antigun politicians - Perata included!

How about taxing internet forums at 5 cents per word?

If they're taxing the right to bear arms, why not the right to free speech?

There may be an unintended consequence lurking in this stupid "bullet tax". A box of 50 .44 Mag goes for $15. A box of 500 .22 goes for $10. Add the "bullet tax" and the .44 Mag costs $17.50. The brick of .22 goes for $35. The center fire rounds cost 17% more. The .22 costs 250% more. Perhaps this will fuel sales for more center fire handgun ammo. Exactly the opposite of what Perata thinks this stupid tax will accomplish. It should also be pointed out that this tax disproportionately affects the poor who only have enough disposable income to shoot .22.

Perata's continuing onslaught of anti-gun laws is one of many reasons I left California for Idaho. Many of my high tech colleagues like to shoot as well. I may yet have a means of encouraging the growth of a high tech sector in my little town in Idaho.

Perata is a walking talking peice of crap! This guy is a socialist traitor and he should be booted out of office immediately. I just wish it was easier done than said. This guy needs to be treated like Gary Condit. I bet it might even be the answer to the problem.

"to save California's hospital trauma centers, some of which are going under. "

Maybe he should consider, instead, a "Wetback Tax", and tax the illegals who have jammed California's hospital emergency rooms and do not pay. Because they are illegals, they have a hard time getting health insurance. When they so much as have a cold, they use emergency rooms because the ER cannot turn them away.

Perata wants the legislature to put the tax idea on the November ballot.

I predict that Davis will find a way to kill this idea.

If y'all are old enough to remember (I was just a snotty-nosed beer-drinking college kid.) There was a handgun ban on the 1982 ballot. That year, Republican George Deukmejian beat Democrat Tom Bradley in their race for governor by a mere 100,000 votes. That was one vote for precinct statewide. Does anyone think that gun owner turnout against the ballot measure had anything to do with it?

Does anyone think Davis and South are dumb enough to let this happen again? Let's hope so.
