SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (Reuters) -
President Bush (news - web sites) said on Sunday he would sign landmark campaign finance reform legislation with only a slight hesitation, reflecting his ongoing concerns about the measure.
"I won't hesitate" signing it, Bush said at a joint news conference with Salvadoran President Francisco Flores as the president wrapped up a four-day trip to Latin America. "It will probably take about three seconds to get to the W, I may hesitate on the period, and then rip through the Bush."
The legislation to reduce the influence of money in politics won final congressional approval last week, and Bush has pledged to sign it soon.
The bill would ban unlimited contributions known as "soft money" to national political parties, limit such donations to state and local parties and restrict broadcast ads by outside groups shortly before elections.
Former independent counsel Kenneth Starr, whose investigation of Bill Clinton's sex life resulted in the president's impeachment in 1998, is to lead a legal challenge that will seek to knock down most of the measure as unconstitutional.
Bush said he felt the campaign bill did not fully address the need to require identification of who is funding so-called independent groups that introduce "scurrilous, untrue" television advertisements in the last days of a campaign, as he said happened to him in his 2000 presidential campaign.
"I've always thought that people who pump money into the political system, we ought to know who they are," he said.
Bush said that nonetheless the "bill is a better bill than the current system," but that some parts of it might not stand up to a court challenge.

The fact remains that just because we supposedly can't get someone 'better' than W elected, that doesn't mean we should support someone who pisses on our liberties.
Again, I'm sorry, but 'screw principle for politics' is complete and utter bulls--t. I like the chess game analogy, but it doesn't change the fact that W is breaking his oath of office, and failing to uphold the constitution. The rest is white noise, senseless name calling, and moral relativism. Sounds familiar...I'm just not used to it from our side.

Of course, he seems to be willing to depress his base for the 2002 midterms and to throw away his base's vote in 2004, so I hope he enjoys his witticism.
Incorrect. When he was courting our vote in 2000, he promised he would NOT sign McCain / Feingold.
I still find it odd that the people who bash Bush claim that they are the rugged individualaists, but have a penchant to use the "royal" we in many of their replies.
Incorrect two years ago George Will asked him a hypothetical. I guess if George Will asked Bush in that same interview whether he would invade Afghanistan and Bush said no, you would be screaming your outrage.
Like it or not this is politics and the politics dictate that you shouldn't give your opponents(McCain, Daschle) an issue to beat your head with.
As it goes now CFR will go to SCOTUS and will follow previous precedent it will knock down the most vile part of CFR, the ad bans.
And the issue dies, along with McCain's holy grail.
In closing, Presidents since and including Washington have played politics. Name me one that hasn't.
I think that I will be waiting a long time for an answer.
