Friday, March 08, 2002 - WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo takes credit for thwarting the Bush administration's last effort to offer partial amnesty to thousands of illegal residents, but Thursday the outspoken immigration foe said he may have been outmaneuvered by the White House.
President Bush has struck a deal with the House leadership to place legislation that offers an extension of amnesty on its consent calendar before Bush heads to Mexico for a state visit next week, the Colorado Republican said. That action should ensure quick House passage of legislation that Bush has repeatedly sought from Congress. It would allow an undocumented person to receive legal standing, such as a valid green card, by filing a declaration with the Immigration and Naturalization Service. It presumably also would require the person to have been in the United States by a certain date and have filed a declaration with the INS from an appropriate sponsor, such as a relative or employer, and pay a $1,000 penalty. "The terms are still up in the air," said Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration, a group that has been allied with Tancredo. "We've heard to the effect that the president wants something to bring down to Mexico." The initial Bush proposal, designed exclusively for Mexicans, once was high on the president's legislative wish list, but it was delayed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. However, as the president noted Wednesday in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, he now is pushing for the extension of the amnesty program known by the section of immigration law that covers it, Section 245I. The president hailed it as a way to reunite family, separated by the border. "If you believe in family values, if you understand the worth of family and the importance of family, let's get 245I out of the United States Congress and give me a chance to sign it," Bush told the chamber members. Tancredo, the head of a congressional caucus on immigration issues and proponent of halting virtually all immigration, said he had blocked a previous attempt by Bush to push an extension of the amnesty program through the House. But this time, he said House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., had agreed to place the issue on the suspension, or consent, calendar, making it difficult to defeat the proposal. The Senate might be more favorable to the bill than the House, expanding the numbers of individuals who can apply, Tancredo said.
You don't realize how much illegal immigration has hit the Atlanta area since 1990. Really, particularly since 1995. It's gotten progressively worse. You rarely see Americans in construction anymore. Landscaping is dominated by Mexicans. There are tons of other industries. I think that we're about to lose another industry: Roofing. This has been an American stronghold up until now, but I'm starting to see Mexicans infiltrating that field. Please, don't give many any profiling garbage. These people most likely don't speak English, and they are in the minority, yet they make up the extreme (98%) of these jobs. Only illegal activity could result in this type of scenerio.
Same story here, word for word. We've been in battle together and didn't even know it!
Anyway, I shouldn't bother you, for your views aren't likely to change.
You tell me to read my bible, but I've never read anything in the Bible that supports destroying ones culture. Do you think that the Jews should give over Israel to the Palestineans, for they need to be more compassionate about other peoples and their desire to destroy their country?
That seems about right for the likes of you. That area is ground zero for all the rich elitists who want to the world to be a third world zoo with themselves ruling over it from behind their sturdy walls.
Classic immigrant story. They always take the physical labor jobs. In the 30's the Japanese were the landscapers in Southern California, they worked hard for their children and their children became doctors, lawyers, and other professionals.
Look landscaping and roofing aren't exactly "piece of cake" jobs that every American kid aspires for and it looks like the Mexicans are filling a niche, especially since Atlanta has boomed since 1990.
I'm still waiting to hear what state Dane is operating out of.
I've never advocated that nor have I advocated 'giving' any part of America away. Can you define what you mean by 'giving' America away?
Specifically, what part of America is being destroyed? Facts please.
As another industry falls, you'll find higher welfare rolls among Americans, as well as the illegals who are making such low salaries with such huge families.
Thus, the connection equals the end of America.
I'm surprised that Bush supports a policy that will most likely result in the destruction of America, one of which, I might add, is Unconstitutional. Yet, he will not use his popularity to take on the Biblically and morally wrong, as well as Constitutionally wrong, acts of butchery of the unborn.
What is it about ILLEGAL immigration, INVASION of UMPTEEN MILLONS, from a CULTURALLY INCOMPATIABLE 3RD WORLD COUNTRY, whose people ILLEGALLY VOTE in our elections, BREAK OUR LAWS, DEMAND WELFARE and REFUSE TO ASSIMILATE that YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND?! Comparing this to past LEGAL European immigration stretching over centuries is absolutely LUDICROUS. Do you have a vested interest in illegal immigration?
If we are going to accept any immigrants, your friend is the only type we should currently accept. He came here legally, he is educated, and he speaks English. There is a huge difference between him and the rabble we currently have invading this (once) great nation.
There is ONE major difference today - Do you recall 9/11? Or is that simply not important to you? I want my government officials working to protect American citizens. How the heck is providing an open door policy on our borders supposed to accomplish this?
To tell you the truth I really don't care about Bush as much as I do keeping a Republican Congress. We had 40 years of liberals running the show and it was a disaster. It's only with this immigration issue that I'm stumped as to what the Repubs are thinking. Poor illegal aliens aren't looking for capital gains tax cuts. They want welfare, food stamps, free schooling, medical care etc etc. That means higher taxes for everyone to pay for it. That's the agenda of the left. And that's who's going to win the coming elections if they're amnestied. Republicans are committing political suicide. Not to mention selling the country out to lawbreakers.
Good point. This is taking on similar dimensions that led to the first revolution--A citizenry that is suppressed by an unresponsive, hostile government.
And even then, they'll still welcome more and more immigrants with open arms. The poorer and more uneducated, the better.
They've already proven themselves to be excellent liars. A good trait to have in poker. But we the American people have the ultimate trump card. When November rolls around, throw the bums out.
