Tancredo doubts he can block amnesty-extension bill
Denver Post ^ | March 8, 2002 | Bill McAllister

Friday, March 08, 2002 - WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo takes credit for thwarting the Bush administration's last effort to offer partial amnesty to thousands of illegal residents, but Thursday the outspoken immigration foe said he may have been outmaneuvered by the White House.

President Bush has struck a deal with the House leadership to place legislation that offers an extension of amnesty on its consent calendar before Bush heads to Mexico for a state visit next week, the Colorado Republican said.

That action should ensure quick House passage of legislation that Bush has repeatedly sought from Congress. It would allow an undocumented person to receive legal standing, such as a valid green card, by filing a declaration with the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

It presumably also would require the person to have been in the United States by a certain date and have filed a declaration with the INS from an appropriate sponsor, such as a relative or employer, and pay a $1,000 penalty.

"The terms are still up in the air," said Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration, a group that has been allied with Tancredo. "We've heard to the effect that the president wants something to bring down to Mexico."

The initial Bush proposal, designed exclusively for Mexicans, once was high on the president's legislative wish list, but it was delayed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. However, as the president noted Wednesday in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, he now is pushing for the extension of the amnesty program known by the section of immigration law that covers it, Section 245I.

The president hailed it as a way to reunite family, separated by the border. "If you believe in family values, if you understand the worth of family and the importance of family, let's get 245I out of the United States Congress and give me a chance to sign it," Bush told the chamber members.

Tancredo, the head of a congressional caucus on immigration issues and proponent of halting virtually all immigration, said he had blocked a previous attempt by Bush to push an extension of the amnesty program through the House. But this time, he said House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., had agreed to place the issue on the suspension, or consent, calendar, making it difficult to defeat the proposal.

The Senate might be more favorable to the bill than the House, expanding the numbers of individuals who can apply, Tancredo said.

Remember Bush is a decent human being that really does, "feel their pain". He really thinks this is a good thing, "compassionate conservatism". Thats the problem. He doesn't care what polls say, because he thinks this is the right thing to do.

This is what I've always thought, but you put it better than I could. If I could believe that The President had nothing but sinister motives for doing this, then I could have hope that his mind could be changed, given enough opposition. But I don't think he will ever change his mind on this. I read once that, when the President was asked what he plans to do about people who disagree with him on this, he replied, "I will bring them around to my way of thinking." He's not going to budge on this. And if he can't bring us around to his way of thinking, I believe that he'll give up a second term rather than give in.

Yeah, I looked at my states and even the "conservative" had a bad record. Not surprising, many on FR think amnesty is great. Whats amazing is that if Clinton was proposing this, Freepers would be going nuts. During the election fiasco, I protested, sent emails, etc. to get Bush elected, but at this point, I'm beginning to have doubts that I did the right thing.

How could anyone propose such a destructive plan after 9/11 and expect any other reaction from the American people?

Simple. They accepted the reality of the situation a LOOONNNNG time ago,and we are just now starting to creep up on it. That reality is that Joe and Jane Sixpak don't give a damn. Yeah,a few of us do,but our numbers are insignificant.

When I said I wrote him, I mean I emailed him. I received a letter of acknowledgment already.

OK folks, you can rant here. But, you'd better be heard by your reps if you expect it to make any difference. Log on here and give them a piece of you mind.

That's the thing that keeps me spinning. My children are 11th generation Americans. How do I tell them that they have to step aside for some one else's kid who not only has no history in the country, but isn't even supposed to be here?

I think it's a combination of Bush's elitist upbringing, and his born again christianity. Obviously, if you watch him, he really does care about the oppressed, poor etc., I don't think there is any doubt about that. The problem is that he grew up among the elite of America, his family, Harvard, Yale etc., so the white guilt had to have rubbed off on him. When you combine that with his faith, ie helping the poor, downtrodden etc, you can see where helping the immigrants would be an issue for him, and one, unfortunatly, he probably won't change his mind on.

What does he have to gain by pushing this thru?

He hastens the death of both the USA as a sovereign nation, and particularly, as Old Hickory pointed out above, the oft vaunted American middle class. The latter is a means to achieve the former. We middle class Americans, especially those that are acutely aware of our sovereignty , are anathema to the overall plan; which is to turn the world into a collective of economic zones, irrespective of any former sovereign nations. We in the current USA will probably live in the northern portion of the American economice zone, which would run from the Great White North down to the Cape of Good Hope. Right now, we're just footing the bill for the mass relocation of third world peasants inside our borders, which will speed the whole process along.

Bush can kiss my vote goodbye. Without an adhered to immigration policy this country will keep sliding towards socialism and third world status. Can someone please tell me how they are going to determine the time frame an illegal immigrant has been in this country?

Yes, isn't that a joke? Our government has never ONCE shown ANY ability to effectively manage immigration...EVER. Remember Reagan's amnesty? It was only supposed to cover some 200,000 illegals. By the time Congress finished butchering the legislation, which Reagan foolishly signed, they had stripped out just about all the restrictive measures Reagan wanted. The result...at least 3 million aliens got amnesty. This is why I am even against "guest worker" programs where an immigrant has to go home after their visa expires. IT NEVER HAPPENS. They find other ways to get around the system or have a kid or two and their stay becomes permanent. Which is another outrage in and of itself.

I am convinced that some great seismic political event must occur that has the power to break the 2 party (actually 1 party) system up to get some much needed and greatly overdue immigration reform. Our current leadership have sold their souls to One World government and will only worsen matters.

What's your deal? Do you support Illegal Immigration? Do you care? Do you care that if this amnesty goes through, that within twenty years, America will break up. The numbers are too great to prevent it.

I've thought that a couple of states should secede from the union, reclaim themselves, "America", build momentum by reinstating true Constitutional Government, and by other states joining "America" once they realize the potential that it has. However, I'm probably dreaming, and it will probably never happen.

You're in the minority, chap. Who do you think you are. Two thirds of Americans are clearly on the side, wholeheartedly, against illegal immigration. Perhaps you'd feel more comfortable in congress, along with all of our other sell-out politicians.

Bush is selling out his country.

Then again, why should he care? He and his family will always have their millions and and can afford to live the high life and not have to deal with the negative aspects of illegal immigration like Joe American Public will.

In fact, they help him and his family get even wealthier.

Bump the whole thing. Every word is truth. I get so sick of seeing the "Pray for Our President as he gets his picture made today!!!!!!!!!!!" threads around here. Bush (and, in fairness, all the pols that can afford to let this happen, from the safety of their million dollar lifestyles) is complicit in handing us working stiffs over to a third world future. Jeezus, I knew there was a reason I quit reading FR for a month. so infuriating.

Indexing for all three lists. And I'll go so far as to say that should the groundswell against the selling out of the US go far enough to drop Bush's popularity, we'll see a dramatic turn in the "war" on terrorism to bring the sheeple back into the fold.

He is going to lose in 2004 and I am going to LMAO!!

Unfortunately, B, he came into this administration admitting he might only be a one-term prez. He's possibly not concerned about getting re-elected; and if he's not worried about 2004, that makes him unpredictable and unaccountable.
