Friday, March 08, 2002 - WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo takes credit for thwarting the Bush administration's last effort to offer partial amnesty to thousands of illegal residents, but Thursday the outspoken immigration foe said he may have been outmaneuvered by the White House.
President Bush has struck a deal with the House leadership to place legislation that offers an extension of amnesty on its consent calendar before Bush heads to Mexico for a state visit next week, the Colorado Republican said. That action should ensure quick House passage of legislation that Bush has repeatedly sought from Congress. It would allow an undocumented person to receive legal standing, such as a valid green card, by filing a declaration with the Immigration and Naturalization Service. It presumably also would require the person to have been in the United States by a certain date and have filed a declaration with the INS from an appropriate sponsor, such as a relative or employer, and pay a $1,000 penalty. "The terms are still up in the air," said Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration, a group that has been allied with Tancredo. "We've heard to the effect that the president wants something to bring down to Mexico." The initial Bush proposal, designed exclusively for Mexicans, once was high on the president's legislative wish list, but it was delayed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. However, as the president noted Wednesday in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, he now is pushing for the extension of the amnesty program known by the section of immigration law that covers it, Section 245I. The president hailed it as a way to reunite family, separated by the border. "If you believe in family values, if you understand the worth of family and the importance of family, let's get 245I out of the United States Congress and give me a chance to sign it," Bush told the chamber members. Tancredo, the head of a congressional caucus on immigration issues and proponent of halting virtually all immigration, said he had blocked a previous attempt by Bush to push an extension of the amnesty program through the House. But this time, he said House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., had agreed to place the issue on the suspension, or consent, calendar, making it difficult to defeat the proposal. The Senate might be more favorable to the bill than the House, expanding the numbers of individuals who can apply, Tancredo said.
Is this a bill to grant amnesty to illegals in America or is it an immigration treaty with Mexico. It sounds like a treaty and as such requires 2/3rds of the senators to vote for ratification.
Or whatever "crisis" we happen to be embroiled in at the time will suffice as the "cause".
I know, and most on this site know what patriotism really means and what it really means to be an American.
"It only takes a few real men to change things" my great Uncle said, circa 1980, as he gave me his old Winchester octagon barrel lever action repeater and told me what it was to be used for. In his words, "it aint good fur nuthin else".
And you're right, it'll happen eventually.
EBUCK
The funny thing, after King Roy stole the Georgia flag, his old neighborhood of Brookwood Drive in the Atlanta suburb of Mableton is flanked with at least seven flag poles displaying the old state flag. Georgians are upset about the flag. Therefore, I believe that he won't be reelected. However, I wish more Georgians, as well as Americans, were as equally upset over the Illegal Invasion. The only problem is that many don't realize how large it is.
When a congressman says he reserves the right to revise, this means he can, and will change everything he said on the floor. So one saying he is for amnesty on the floor can revise his statement so if his constiuents call him on it, he can bring forth the phoney record saying that he was against it.
These guys are like watching a nest of snakes, there are more moves they can make, than an honest person can keep up with, like trying to watch which coconut hull the pea is under. We won't know until the yea's and nay's are called what the deal is.
Sweetheart, it isn't 'mean' to tell the truth...the truth is what sets one free. I, for one, am quite sick and tired of hearing the old '3rd party ain't got a change' mantra--hell no they don't, so long as the suckers continue to cling to the two-timing, cheatin' parties they've grown up and old with--the ones that never change--they fluff the pillows a bit to make it look like they're gonna do something--only thing is, soon as you lay your head on the pillow, the screwdriver comes out and starts doing a number on your back.
The sunshine patriots make me puke. My 89 year old, stove-up arthritic Dad has more testosterone than most of these ya-hoos prancing around calling themselves conservative.
No. White.
and do you think the law doesn't apply to people of Mexican or "Hispanic" heritage? Just curious.
Of course it applies.
The Dems are cheering you and your friends.Bush took the issue from them, as a bonus those Dems have the far right attacking the most popular president ever.
For months your FR contingent have been screaming about the Bush amnesty of 3 million people.
Where is it? Anything less and I expect an apology.
Again, the Dems applaud (or employ?) you.
What other racists? You mean your homies, "La Raza"? Now there's a racist criminal gang if there ever was one. There's something you boys should know. So far, you've had some success because the only people you've dealt with have been liberal politicians and their civilian drones. You've gotten all the concessions they could give you by scaring them with your accusations of racism and other tactics.
Now you have run up against the real Americans. We don't care what names you call us. We're not afraid of your ignorant, criminal asses. We are the ones who pay the freight, fight the wars, and clean up the messes made by weak minded pissants like the ones in government who have given you punks free rein. You're going to have to roll over us to get your way from now on. Better bring a lunch, boy. We're not the cowardly liberal pissants you've been dealing with up until now.
We'll send you home, whatever it takes.
I don't have buddies here.
That's a shill thing, like this thread.
The record shows Arne debated, won, and was attacked by a few hundred "buddies".
Sure, he lost his temper. But that process spoke volumes regarding "buddies" and "shills".
Not only did you, et al, lose the argument, you will lose the issue.
Reality sucks, huh?
The matter was postponed. Until when?
It was requested that an accounting of the yea's and nay's occur. Does that mean the voice-vote maneuver was thwarted?
