WASHINGTON - Sprinkling his speech with Spanish, President Bush wooed Hispanic voters Wednesday by renewing his support for an amnesty bill for illegal immigrants.

"We've got a spirit of amistad," Bush told 200 Hispanic business leaders at the White House, using the Spanish word for friendship.

I totally agree - but what can we do about it? I am open to suggestions.

Well like you I am calling up my reps in Congress and following it up with e-mails and faxes. I think that the "NumbersUSA" site has some interesting suggestions. Another is what USADAVE and Miss American Pie brought up about forming a protest march on the White House. I'm game for that if the time is right. I also support FAIR.

Did you do anything at all besides bitch and moan? Neo-con my ass, I get involved, establish an amicable relationship with my representaives and whenever necessary, make them justify - and quantify - their schemes and whims and largesse. Because its my money they're flushing down that bowl, but that's a neo-con concern. Take the "R" out of your moniker, that about says it all.

I see I struck a nerve. Since you brought it up, in years past I was VERY ACTIVE in local republican politics and was a part of numerous political campaigns from Reagan's down to the local level. And while I am no long active in the party I still make sure that my reps know what I think on a range of issues. I also support quite a few political organizations that back causes I think are highly important...immigration reform being one of them.

BTW, I note that you did not answer any of my questions but chose instead to smear my name. It speaks volumes about where you are coming from.

Valin, there would be an equilibrium established - when the menial and entry-level jobs that illegal aliens will, and do, take in our economy are full, the excess labor pool here from Mexico will naturally return home.

The problem, which none of these dunderheads want to confront, is that the market has been corrupted by politicians who have constructed safehouses of entitlements that enable and encourage non-productive illegals to come here even in the absence of regular work. That's the problem. The Mexicans want a bigger better deal for themselves and their loved ones. Agenda-laden political and social institutions welcome them with open arms and checkbooks.

It's the Los Angeles, Maricopa and San Bernadino County Commisssioners, it's the California Department of Human Rights, it's the Riverside and San Antonio School Boards, and it's an unmotivated local police and INS enforcement vehicle shirking their duties. It's a slew of governmental and non-profit interest groups dedicated to guiding illegal aliens onto a welfare track that will guarantee and fund their permanent settlement.

If the public benefits given to the non-employed illegals are uniformly rescinded, they will eventually go home. Those gainfully employed should have a temporary legal residency status while their applications are being processed. The problem has political roots, and the solution requires a political mobilization as well. Not likely from the bellyache brigade. It's easier to blame the dirty Mexicans and George W Bush.

That's exactly what I did and why I did it. But it won't happen again.

Shouldn't you be heading out to your paper route? I'd keep a watchful look over my shoulder if I were you; I saw your boss interviewing a 15 year old Mexican kid yesterday ...

We need more of this:

California Children Living in Poverty Rose by 430,000 in '90s, Survey

The findings were also affected by other social and demographic shifts in the 1990s, including the welfare reform movement and an increase in immigration that has produced a population in which one-fifth of all children are immigrants or children of foreign-born parents.

California had more children living in poverty, living with low-income working families, living with a parent without a high school diploma or living with no full-time employed parent than the national average, the study found.

This wouldn't have anything to do with immigration would it?

Thanks for the pings.

Nah, just a coincidence. Remember - diversity is our strength!
