(Israeli) Army Issuing 40,000 Handgun Permits

The government is taking immediate steps to put more licensed handguns on the streets in the hope of citizens being in the “right place at the right time” to prevent terror attacks. Senior police officials have acknowledged that in several cases of late, citizens prevented continuing bloodshed by using their licensed weapons against terrorists.

The army will be issuing handgun permits to 40,000 reserve duty officers of the rank of captain and above. Permit will also be granted to former combatants from commando units, and retired police and Prison Authority officers.

Officials estimate the actions could result in an additional 60,000 handguns on the streets nationwide.

Police Chief Shlomo Aharonishki acknowledged that citizens have taken the initiative and brought terror attack to a halt, but he added, he remains concerned over a situation in which citizens with licensed weapons may be “too light on the trigger”.

Ministry of the Interior officials report that since the start of the Oslo War on Sept. 29, 2000, there has been an 80% increase in the number of licensed handguns nationwide, pointing out that in 2001, 4,588 permits were issued as opposed to 2,550 in 2000. Ministry officials add there are currently 340,000 licensed handguns nationwide, 265,000 of which are issued to private individuals.

Boy is reality different than perception. I live in the heart of the Blue Zone (a stone's throw North of Seattle) and we don't need any permit to buy a handgun only a permit to carry.

Are you really in North Carolina? I just assumed the Southern states were better than the Northwestern states in regards to 2nd ammendment stuff.

I really think you are mistaken. The permit to purchase is a federal law, I beleive. It is nation-wide and mandatory. Maybe you haven't purchased a handgun for a while. I just found out about this new permit myself about 1-1/2 years ago when I tried to buy an old pistol in a used gun shop.

Beleive you do. All firearms requires a background check BUT since the process of the handgun permit includes the background check, it's considered done and the permit suffices in leiu of the manadatory check.

If so you're not far enough from New Jersey.

NJ: $50 fee. 2-3 month process. Fingerprinting at time of application. Big mouth, dirty looks from the people who 'process'you. Need 2 witnesses vouching for my character; one must be out of state.Conveniently lost all records - had to start over after 1 month wait.

NC: $5 fee. No fingerprint (until approved.) Friendly staff. No 3rd party witness. 2-5 day wait.

May not be a world away from NJ but as you see its far enough.

Oh, if in Israel the streets are paved with handguns, then surely I shall go there to live....

Years ago there was a great editorial cartoon in the WSJ where one Congressman told another (paraphrasing) "Of course I voted for gun control. Who wants to meet constituents who are angry -- and armed?"

New York: $76 application fee, 6 month to 18 month wait. Fingerprinting, mug shots, 4 character references of at least three years. If you are in the 70% who are turned down for no good reason, add $500 for lawyer and an additional 18 months.

You have to have a permit? In FL you can keep a firearm in you car if you want...no permit required. Concealed Carry is easy to get too.

Yikes. So this is why I'm doing it now. I figure it won't get better than $5, 2-3 days. So move down here. Not only are the gun laws friendly, but the weather's great, housing is better, and the state is really beautiful in the mountains and the beaches. (Sorry, 'shore')

(But we do have the Clinton wannabe: John Edwards as Senator.) 70 degrees tommorrow....gotta go fertilize the lawn....

No, I think you are mistaken. I've bought a half a dozen handguns in the last 3 years and one in the last few months and am in the process of buying one now.

I've never been asked for a permit to purchase.

The first time I purchased I had to do the waiting period thing but then I got a Concealed Pistol Permit and now only have to do the instant check and then they hand it over.

That must be a state law in your state.

I don't want to quible about semantics, but the NICS check is done at no charge at the point of sale. The FFL rolls the cost of the federal paperwork into the cost of the pistol and at no time have I had to show a permit to buy a handgun. I think we are experiencing the differences in local laws.

I'm guessing in your state people that get a concealed carry permit are not required to get a permit to purchase. If you didn't have a concealed carry permit, I think they wouldn't sell a handgun to you untill you first obtained a permit to purchase.

No. I bought an SW99 .40 before I even applied for a Concealed Pistol Permit. I had to fill out the standard BATF forms, NICS check, and then do the waiting period.

If I had to get a permit to purchase a handgun don't you think I would have held it in my hand at sometime? Maybe some states make you get a permit but it is not a federal law.

You used to be a LEO, clear this up.

Some people on this thread seem to believe it is federal law that you must have buy a permit to purchase a handgun.

I'm trying to tell them that it must be a state law where they live because in my state no permit is needed, only permits for concealed carry.

mamelukesabre and Swanks here is another example. I have applied for a non-resident CCW permit for Florida and they didn't ask for any pistol permit as would be needed if a permit was necessary to own a pistol. It would be one of the things they would ask for; what is your ownership permit number for your pistol.

Individual states requirements are different and above and beyond of federal background checks BatFags enforce. For example in Texas if you come into local gunslinger shop and purchase all you need is a Texas Drivers license, fill out a 4473 piss yellow sheet and wait for the FiBi background check to come back approved. Usually that takes just a few minutes, while ya wait sort of deal.

Now if your a CHL holder ( again in Texas) the FiBi background check is not required because your CHL requirements in Texas "exceed" the checks theirs would accomplish.

Thus in my little corner of the world I pop in , lay down the cash, fill out the 4473 piss yellow sheet, show em my drivers and CHL license and am back on the street faster than the drive up at Micky'D's.

And that's too damn much time IMHO as we already have a constitution that covers such. But my fight isn't with the LEO's it's with the socialist polidiots and their presstitutes who promote their seditious agenda..........

Stay Safe , hope I answered yer question . I can only speak for my own state versus the anti-firearm socialist states unconstitutional laws. :o)

an additional 60,000 handguns on the streets

40,000 more permits = 60,000 more pistols.

Two-gun Pete. Pearl handles, slung low.
