Dear Fellow FREEPers,
Found this website via the Weekly Standard, and think you all might want to know about it. MEMRI translates the Arab and Hebrew press accounts and publishes them on the web! No more depending on Peter "Leftist" Jennings for what the Arab and/or Israeli press is saying. You can find, for instance, "The Jews are Bloodsuckers and Will Yet Conquer America", and other pro-terrorist tripe.
When your unthinking (are there any other kind?) liberal friends start to bash Israel, direct them to the kind of press coverage Israel gets in the Palestenian press...perhaps you'll convince them the terrorists killing innocents in Israel are enemies of peace.
Anyway, here is the mission statement from the web site itself:
The Middle East Media and Research Institute (MEMRI) is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization. MEMRI was established in February 1998 to study and analyze intellectual developments and politics in the Middle East and the Arab-Israeli conflict, with a particular emphasis on its Israeli-Palestinian dimension. In its research, MEMRI is dedicated to the proposition that the values of liberal democracy, civil society, and the free market are relevant to the Middle East and to United States foreign policy towards the region.
MEMRI relies on primary source material that it translates from the original Arabic and Hebrew. These translations serve as a basis for original analysis and for informing the broader public about political, cultural, social, and religious trends in the Middle East. MEMRI also studies internal developments in Israel, analyzing political and cultural trends in Israel.
In pursuing its goals, the Institute produces Inquiry & Analysis (original analysis of Middle East affairs) and Special Dispatch (translations from the Arab media) series distributed by fax and e-mail to legislators, diplomats, journalists, academics, and other interested parties, in-depth Special Reports, and videotapes from Arab television. MEMRI's staff also publishes articles on a regular basis in a variety of scholarly journals and magazines.
