During the Victorian era, nearly every woman of quality owned an expensive black velvet ribbon, from which to hang their costly heirloon cameo. In fact I have a wonderful choker that I bought at Neiman Marcus years ago that always gets comments. A black cord tied around my neck with an astounding heavy Barry Kieselstein-Cord cross. Oh, and one from Barney's New York ... a 24K choker chain with a filigreed cross with an emerald in the middle. Hmm, think I'll wear that one to work tomorrow.

I have an 18 carat gold choker from Egypt, and believe it or not, I've got one of those cameos. It was my great-great grandmother's. Though it's beautiful, I don't wear it because I'm afraid I'll lose it.
