BTW, as you probably know, Gov. Jeb Bush is recognized nationwide as a strong supporter of school choice.

In addition to co-writing Profiles in Courage, a book about the extraordinary deeds of ordinary FL citizens, Gov. Jeb Bush is the one who wrote the foreword to this highly acclaimed book:

School Choice,
foreword by Jeb Bush.

Both books can be found on the amazon.com page here, if this link works! :) Also, to see a list of Gov. Bush's accomplishments in education during his first term as governor, click here.

Finally, as I've mentioned before, with Janet Reno currently driving around in her truck, now may be the perfect time to get your free "JEB!" bumper-sticker -- by clicking HERE!

PS And, from the Orlando Sentinel: Parents see brighter futures with new school-voucher law.

We should have implemented the vouchers --- but by states, not by the federal government --- years ago instead of that idiotic forced bussing.

Kids trapped in poor public schools deserve better than the answers they gave you and Cheri.

One party doesn't want to do anything about it, because it would upset the education bureaucracy.

This is an interesting voucher program. We need each state to experiment with variations. That's the beauty of having states, and why education shouldn't be directed out of Washington.

But somebody needs to make it happen, and Jeb is doing just that.

Nice job summer, I too had difficulty finding challenging material for "gifted" students. But they did come back and took additional classes from me so I know I was "OK" in their book. One time I thought I had a student who independently figured out a type of integral calculus. This was the one and only time I researched a student's folder. (I was looking for signs of genius from other teachers.) What I found was many instances where her parents had aparently pushed her to excell. She graduated with honors and I lost track, but it was interesting.

This is the first time I realized you taught in an inner city school. (My school was mixed one third each of inner city poor, middle class and wealthy beyond belief.) It is a very tough job to work under those frustrations. My hat is off to you. (Actually, I don't wear hats anymore) FRegards, KC

Great article, summer. For kids like Cheri, there really should be a better option than sending them to the same dull/normal classroom environment day after day.

bttt. FV doesn't have a torn retina, just have to do peripheral vision test on self every day. Spent today in doc's waiting room. Get your bumper sticker. Every Florida freeper car and our acquaintances should be stickered for Jeb. This is not a time to be vain about your car's appearance and the Jeb bumper sticker will enhance the beauty of your bumper. Visit summer's bumper sticker thread or visit jeb.org and click on "volunteer". Yard signs available there too

This is great. When I think Jeb has created tons of good programs, he thinks of another one. Whatta guy. ENHANCE YOUR BUMPER FOR JEB. FORGET THOSE OL JANET PICKUP BLUES.

Here are the requirements of voucher taking schools:

FloridaChild will award scholarships to help children attend any nonpublic school that wishes to admit them, provided that the school is located in Florida, offers an education to students in any grades K-12, and meets the following conditions:

a. Complies with the antidiscrimination provisions of 42 U.S.C. s. 2000d.
b. Meets state and local health and safety laws and codes.
c. Complies with all state laws relating to the general regulation of nonpublic schools.
d. Demonstrates fiscal soundness by being in operation for one school year, or provides the Florida Department of Education with a statement by a certified public accountant confirming that the nonpublic school is insured and the owner or owners have sufficient capital or credit to operate the school for the upcoming year serving the number of students anticipated with expected revenues from tuition and other sources that may be reasonably expected. In lieu of such a statement, a surety bond or letter of credit for the amount equal to the scholarship funds for any quarter may be filed with the Department.

I am leery of these generic, wholesome-sounding regulations, especially when one considers what the govt. schools now sneak into the "health", "safety" and "antidiscrimination" department.

Take item (a), "complies with antidiscrimination provisions of...." Who are voucher taking schools prohibited from discriminating against? Teachers who bring their gayness, marxism, anti-Americanism, etc. into the classroom? Can the school refuse to hire transvestites? Do they have to use affirmative action?

Item (b) speaks of "health and safety laws and codes". As you know, an awful lot of liberal and sexual **** has invaded classrooms safely labeled "health" and "safety" issues. Sexual instruction (health) and homosexuality normalizing (safety) is rampant in many schools today. Are the voucher taking schools required to adopt this curricula?

If I've learned anything these past eight years, it's to read between the lines. I'd love to read the ACTUAL HANDBOOK that the schools receive, and the ACTUAL CHANGES schools have had to make in order to become a voucher school, not the government's nicey-nicey description.

Thanks for the ping, summer. I am in TX, but I ordered one of those free Jeb bumper stickers. (Wasn't that you that posted about those?)
Silly me...when I first read it, though, my first thought was "free Jeb???? Why's he locked up???"

Well done article, and I'm glad to hear about Jeb's stepping in on this one. I was lucky when I was in 4th and 5th grade to be in a school with a GT program, and it was the last time I remember having a hard time with school (outside of certain classes in college). I'm glad to hear promising youngsters in bad situations can have the chance to exercise their talent. Thanks for the ping!

summer . . . thanks for the heads up.

I believe that this 3rd Scholarship/Voucher Program empowers low-income parents by leveling the playing field so they can have the same choices of mobility that only wealthier parents have now. It is wonderful to see a program that can enable poor families to be the final judges in determining the quality of their child's education.

Can you just imagine how successful our public school system could be with the focus on parental choice at the local level? I firmly believe this one issue alone would make a major transformation in the quality of our educational system.

Thanks JEB . . . he knows that parents put their children first . . . he is dedicated in doing the same.

FRegards . . .
