Students arrested in lunchroom fight

02/21/2002

From Staff Reports

Two high school students involved in a cafeteria fight today will face charges of assaulting a police officer, Arlington police said.

The fight at Bowie High School escalated when students threw bottles at officers responding to the scene, school officials said. Six other students were arrested for disorderly conduct, police said.

"One of the students, after he had been placed in custody, broke out two of the windows in one of the patrol cars," police spokesman Sgt. James Hawthorne said. But he said there was no major property damage at the school.

"People were running all over the place near the front entrance of the school, and students were throwing bottles at the cops and the principals and each other," said senior Keith Roane, 18.

"I guess people were doing it because they could, I don't know why," he added. Ten students and two officers suffered minor injuries in the incident, Sgt. Hawthorne said.

Some students were being treated for exposure to pepper spray and another student was taken to a hospital for an injured wrist, officials said.

People gather at the scene of a disturbance at Bowie High School.

"Over the past week, there's been like three fights," 11th-grader Boyd Phillips said. "Today, there was just one big one. Lots of people going at it."

Dr. Mac Bernd, school district superintendent, said he doesn't know what caused the altercation.

"It involved throwing Coke bottles and fisticuffs," he said. "We locked the school down. We called police. They were here immediately.

"The situation is now under control. We're going to keep extra police and security at Bowie High School to make sure that this doesn't happen again."

School district spokeswoman Rhonda Agahamalian said the incident began when a small group of students began a fight in the Bowie cafeteria. When police officers arrived at the scene, more students became involved.

No weapons have been found, she said, and "there is no evidence that this was gang-related."

By early afternoon, police had blocked off access to the school parking lot, and hundreds of students were gathered outside in their cars and along nearby streets.

The school was not closed, but lunch was canceled, the school district said. Dr. Bernd said the TAAS testing taking place today will continue.

Walt Zwirko, a reporter for Dallas websites, and Michael A. Lindenberger and Jason Trahan of The Dallas Morning News contributed to this report.

Maybe they watched the Cleveland - Jax football game and thought it was the okay thing to do.

Good grief. Throwing bottles, calling cops! In my wayward youth, all we did was fling greasy "oven fried" potatoes at one another. I'll never forget the time I ducked just in the nick of time, only to see my friend, who was sitting across from me, wearing a chunk of potato - intended for me - on her glasses. It just stuck there, dripping various hydrogenated oils down her cheek.

This is a school that obviously needs more diversity. A lack of diversity leads to many bad things, and out-of-control food fights might just be one of them.

Diversity is always a good thing (just look at Yugoslavia) so I agree with your point, but I think it’s just a case of some fine young scholars letting off a little steam. For the soon to graduate Seniors, they’re probably tensely waiting acceptance letters from Universities or prestigious scholarships.

Looks like it happened in a real upscale part of town too.

And the salt and pepper shakers that were loosened to the max such that anyone using them got a plateful of the stuff!
I went to Cici's Pizza a while back and the hot dried pepper dispenser was like that. I went to the manager and asked them if they had a group of 8-9 year-olds in earlier. His eyes got big and he said Yeah, what'd they do? I smiled and told him. He had the help check all tables after that. . .

Arlington is pretty much a middle-class city. I mean they've got Six Flags over Texas, the Ballpark in Arlington (Texas Rangers), and the University of Texas (my Alma Mater), etc. I was surprised this happened there, but ITEOTWAWKI, I guess! :o)

To think my poor, socially deprived children are missing all these positive experiences because we choose to home school. Will they forgive us? ;-)

We are in the metroplex - not Arlington though. Our kids are in 9th and 11th and did not have to take the TAAS today.

Truly, I hope the students that were involved will be punished to the maximum allowable limit.

But if these cops were teachers, then what? The teachers would either be (a) discplined for "not being able to control the students" or (b) disciplined if a teacher tries to touch the student on a shoulder to restrain the student. But, a student who assults a cop, gets arrested. Yes, this sounds fair!
