GIBRALTAR -- The British military apologized Monday for invading Spain over the weekend -- by mistake.

About 20 Royal Marines went slightly off course in an amphibious exercise and stormed a Spanish beach Sunday morning near the British colony of Gibraltar, a British Defense Ministry spokesman said.

Residents of the Spanish border town of La Linea watched in astonishment as the beach filled with combat-ready troops wielding mortar launchers and SA 80 assault rifles, according to Spanish press reports, which said at least 30 troops were involved.

Nuclear weapons dropped on Spain by the USAF, now the Royal Marines invade it. What next and it now being a NATO member too? On 17 January 1966 a Strategic Air Command B-52G, serial 58-247, had a mid air with the result that 4 B-28 nukes rained down near the village of Palomares in Southern Spain. Two of the weapons high explosives detonated on impact with the ground, one landed near intact and the other fell into the sea.

I work alongside a few Royal Navy personnel and they’ve been having a very enjoyable couple of days poking fun at their Royal Marine counterparts in the building where I work. Hey, the Royal Marines can always claim that the map came from the US National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) and was a bit out of date Chinese Embassy style :o)

difficult to know exactly where you are'' on the poorly marked coastline

They'll find things much more clearly marked in Afghanistan.
