Look, Iran-contra was a witch hunt, and Lawrence Walsh was out of control.

The Dems criminalized dissent from their view of foreign policy in Central America. Furthermore, there were situation that made this situation much different than anything the Clintons did.

So what is wrong with lying to congress, they lie and steal from us all the time.

If the average memember of congress did what he does to us in the real world, they would be serving time for multiple felonies.

So me a honest member of congress, and I will have a heart attack, that includes Ron Paul, he has been there to long and has become tainted.

"Look, Iran-contra was a witch hunt, and Lawrence Walsh was out of control."

As mentioned by the next poster, dissent was "criminalized", so the "Right" thing to do was to "go around the law, then just lie about it".

Yep, makes sense to me. Pretty neat idea. Glad the Repubs are just as Criminal as the Dems. Balances things out. For everybody but us peons.

Since the Boland Amendment had prohibited Congress from funding the Contras in Nicaraugua, the Reagan administration had to come up with some method of funding to keep the Sandinistas from exporting Communism throughout Central America.

Part of the Iran-Contra arms sales were for this purpose. My opinion is that the aid given to the Contras probably saved Central America and the United States bloodshed in later years in order to remove the Communists.

Of course the liberals thought otherwise; they said the sandinistas were fine.

I believe it does matter. Clinton lied to cover his own ass. Iran-Contra was about funding an anti-Communist insurgency.

If this is a free country where the people rule, then why is it a major crime pushishable by hard prison time for a citizen to lie to congress, but it is perfectly legal for a congressmen to lie to the people of this nation.

Agreed. I like LTC North's views. I do not like that he and Poindexter violated their oaths taken as Commissioned Officers by lying to Congress - yes, they lied. The fact that Congress or the Independent Counsel were out of control does not diminish their obligation as officers.

It is ok to lie to Congress?

This is a political question rather than a moral question, and the answer is yes.

The Constitution gives the president authority over defense and foreign policy. It also gives the president unfettered power to pardon -- a power obviously intended to be moderated by elections rather than by courts.

When the people tuned in to the congressional hearings and heard what had happened, the majority approved.
