Iran-Contra Figure Poindexter Now Heading New Pentagon Office

Published: Feb 14, 2002

WASHINGTON (AP) - Retired Adm. John Poindexter, who was President Reagan's national security adviser during the Iran-Contra affair, is directing a new Pentagon office that will focus on new kinds of military threats, including terrorist organizations.

Poindexter became head of the Information Awareness Office last month.

The office is one of two created recently by the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, which finances research into new military technology. The office was created following the Sept. 11 attacks.

Poindexter had been a consultant for DARPA for several years before his appointment.

Along with former National Security Council aide Oliver North, Poindexter was convicted as part of a guns-for-hostages deal that prompted a congressional investigation. He was convicted in 1990 on five felony counts of conspiracy, making false statements to Congress and obstructing congressional inquiries into the affair. The convictions against both men were later overturned.

Daddy has been busy. We need Kissinger as Sec. of State. Let's try to find a place foe Dick Cheney too.

Let me see, all Poindexter did was lie to Democrats who had been notorious for leaking info to the press (Leahy coms to mind).

Iran-contra, come to think of it, was not such a bad op after all. We sold the Iranians outdated equipment as highly inflated prices, got some of the hostages out of the hands of terrorists in Lebanon, bled Saddam a little, and then used the proceeds to fund the freedom fighters in Nicaragua in their efforts against the Sandinistas. Incidentally, the Sandinistas were probably helping to run drugs into the U.S., so taking them out was not a bad thing, IMHO.

All in all, it was a pretty neat idea.

It is ok to lie to Congress? He lied and he covered up and it does not matter why. Those kinds of people are the type I thought we here on FR wanted out of government.

Look, Iran-contra was a witch hunt, and Lawrence Walsh was out of control.

The Dems criminalized dissent from their view of foreign policy in Central America. Furthermore, there were situation that made this situation much different than anything the Clintons did.

So what is wrong with lying to congress, they lie and steal from us all the time.

If the average memember of congress did what he does to us in the real world, they would be serving time for multiple felonies.

So me a honest member of congress, and I will have a heart attack, that includes Ron Paul, he has been there to long and has become tainted.

"Look, Iran-contra was a witch hunt, and Lawrence Walsh was out of control."

As mentioned by the next poster, dissent was "criminalized", so the "Right" thing to do was to "go around the law, then just lie about it".

Yep, makes sense to me. Pretty neat idea. Glad the Repubs are just as Criminal as the Dems. Balances things out. For everybody but us peons.

This man has proven he will lie to cover for the executive branch. That is not the kind of people that we need in government. Go ahead give some more history lessons...it does not change the fact he is a liar and will lie.

I have to ask though. When the next Democrat Admin. gets into the White House and wants to bring in some of the known liars from the Clinton Clan...that will be ok..because they never got brought to justice?

Yep, as long as Democrats and Republicans break the law equaly that makes it right all of the sudden. Oh and I almost forgot as long as the Republican does what a Democrat would do and does it first...that makes it right too.

Two wrongs do not make a right, but 2 wrongs squared minus 16 wrongs plus 33 equals a right. Solve for wrong :o)

Sorry. I'm all out of sympathy for lying Clymers wo deliberately endanger the national security of the United States by aiding and abetting the presence of Soviet client states in Central America.

My only complaint is that the money should have been spent on arranging "unfortunate accidents" for the traitors who did so.

My getting fat and someone telling a bold face lie to Congress are two diffrent things. It is against the law to lie to Congress while under oath, or has the rule of law changed about that?
