FBI says one claimed to know a Sept. 11 hijacker

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 13 — Two men were in federal custody Wednesday after they were arrested this week in a tow truck carrying fake identification near the Pentagon, law enforcement officials said. Law enforcement officials said one of the men had previously been interviewed as part of the investigation of the Sept. 11 attacks and claimed to have known one of the terrorists responsible for them.

I think when AlQaida hits, if they have not completely destroyed the target, they ramp up for another try on the same target until they are successful.

The WTC is proof of that. I guess the same people that consider this funny were laughing the loudest when shoe-bomber Reid was arrested. I don't believe they'd be laughing, in retrospect, if they or a loved one was on that plane. Terrorists aren't necessarily idiots, although they use dim bulbs as a means to an end. We dismiss those who would destroy us -- no matter how inept they may appear -- at our own peril.

LUCY CALDWELL, a spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police, told NBC News on Tuesday night that state troopers pulled the men over at 10:05 p.m. Monday as they were driving on State Route 110 by the Pentagon, which is in the Washington suburb of Arlington, Va. Commercial vehicles, including tow trucks, have been prohibited from using the road since November, she said.


Caldwell said the men ignored a trooper who signaled them to pull over and were stopped down the highway by a second trooper, who searched the truck and found numerous false identification cards. Once the trooper saw the fake IDs, which included a half-dozen drivers’ licenses from several states “with different identities on them,” he called in the FBI, Caldwell said.


The men were not armed. Bomb-sniffing dogs searched the truck but found no explosives or explosive residue, Caldwell said.


The men were first held in the Arlington jail but later were transferred to an undisclosed location.


NO BAIL FOR SUSPECT


One of the men, identified as Imad Abdel-Fattah Hamed, 26, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Jordan, was ordered held without bond Wednesday afternoon on a charge of document identification fraud.


A federal magistrate set his arraignment for Friday in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, the same courthouse where John Walker Lindh, the California man who fought with the Taliban in Afghanistan, pleaded not guilty to a 10-count indictment Wednesday.


In an affidavit filed in support of the charges, the FBI said it interviewed Hamed on Oct. 22 as part of its investigation of the Sept. 11 attacks. During the October interview, Hamed provided a Social Security number that did not match the number he provided Monday night, the bureau said.


Hamed was not arrested or charged in October, and the FBI did not say why he was interviewed.


Federal law enforcement sources told NBC News on condition of anonymity that Hamed provided more information Tuesday, saying he had attended school with one of the terrorists responsible for the Sept. 11 hijackings.


The sources said Hamed had not yet undergone a polygraph examination, however, so agents could not be certain that he was telling the truth.


The other man arrested Monday carried a passport from the United Arab Emirates identifying him as Sultan Rashed Sultan Jasmon Alzaabi, 22, according to FBI affidavit. He was in the custody Wednesday of the Immigration and Naturalization Service.


Caldwell said both men had also been charged with state traffic violations.


SUSPECTS SAY TRUCK WAS BROKEN


According to the FBI affidavit, both men said they were driving the truck Monday night to Maryland for repairs. Hamed told agents that he simply missed the signs banning commercial traffic along Route 110, it said.


It was not immediately clear whether the men resembled those the FBI named Monday as possible conspirators in a terrorist attack to be carried out this week. A Justice Department official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity that a check of immigration records indicated that none of the 18 men named Monday had ever been in the United States.


Attorney General John Ashcroft would not comment on the arrests at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Because of our open borders and our need to give illegals drivers licenses and access to welfare benefits, our country is filled with a black market for fake id.

I'd say there's as much, if not more, of a market in fake IDs for people under 21.

Thanks for the post. This is probably a very significant event. I wonder when and if a Saudi Arabia or Pakastan connection will be made to these two folks.

Let's hope that the FBI closes down all Al-Quada cells operating in the US soon.
