I had an idea for a web site. "Surveill the Surveillors."

Basically anyone could post to it. I envisoned an army of folks, armed with GPS receivers and note pads. The site would list the location of every surveillance camera, no matter what it is "for". If the purpose is known it would be posted too. Cameras in 7-11 stores. Cameras at busy intersections. "Red-Light" cameras. "Security" cameras. Freeway cams. All of them.

It could become sort of a craze, or so I fantasize.

I can't figure out a way to make money with such a site.

But I am certain that it would make Big Brother uncomfortable...perhaps uncomfortable enough to try to shut it down. I dunno.

Whaddya think?

It won't work. First, most of the cameras will be undetectable. Second, in most cases cameras will be in the view of other cameras. Anyone showing too much interest in the cameras will be suspected as a possible terrorist or thief planning an operation or heist.

Get your head right. You must learn to love Big Brother, Winston.

You know, if one person, just one person walks up and smashes one of these cameras with a rock then just walks away, they may think he's really sick and they won't go after him.

And if two people, two people do it, in harmony, they may think they're both faggots and they won't go after either of them.

And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking up and smashing a camera with a rock and walking away. They may think it's an organization.

And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day, I said fifty people a day walking up and smashing the camera with a rock and walking away... and friends they may thinks it's a movement…

And that's what it is…

I would prefer to see surveillance of public places opened to the public, so, for example, you and I could data-mine the images to see how much time cops spend in donut shops, or how much time public works vehicles fit the description of "What's orange and sleeps five?"

All kidding aside, I think that without openness, we would get the same results as in the U.K.: Lots of cameras, but street crime goes up anyway.

Check out Wearcam. It is mostly about "wearable" computers, but it also has a part about turning the tables on surveillance camera operators at: wearcam.org/maybecamera.htm

I think that is brilliant.....regardless of the profitability of it...and I am an avowed Captitalist!

I am thinking right now of a 0cents Stamp to "ridicule" this concept...not yours, theirs!

Ball-peen hammers would be cheaper than GPS receivers.
