Modern competitive shooters don't like having 30 calibre bullets going subsonic enroute since the buffeting encountered will effect accuracy at extreme ranges; nonetheless, you have to figure that any bullet fired at a target more than a couple of hundred meters out during the black-powder age went subsonic enroute and they had target rifles capable of six or eight inch groups at 600 yards in the 1840's.

That almost leads me to think that the ultimate sniper rifle might be some sort of a bolt-action cartridge/cleanshot thing using a big old-fashioned 50/100 or 50/110 cartridge and one of the modern clean versions of black powder and a bullet heavy enough to retain accuracy while going subsonic enroute, and some sort of a suppressor at the muzzle. That could amount to some sort of a side-venting muzzlebrake with flex hose going into a small hushthrush muffler or some such. The enemy would have no way of knowing they were being shot at whatsoever. If you know anybody in the military interested in such things, you might want to run the idea by them.

Here's a link to some of the finest available in the world, from Finland, where there are no legal restrictions or limitations on firearms sound dampening devices, whether you call them silencers, suppressors, moderators or mufflers.

The Finns have really got their act together in this field.

BR-Tuote Oy *REFLEX* firearms sound suppressors.

Like every Marine I have served as a target puller in the business end of the firing range.

The supersonic crack of bullets overhead is loud, as loud as a child's cap pistol.

Also, you hear it before you hear the sound of the muzzle blast.

Great technical info...I've been told, (not that I would actually try such a thing,) that a rubber baby nipple with an X cut into it, stretched over the muzzle of a .22 rimfire greatly reduces the level of noise produced by the weapon. I've also been told that when .22 shorts are used the muffling effect is even greater...I've been told that it is highly possible to use such a combination to shoot cats, crows, blackbirds, rats, etc. in densely populated urban areas without the neighbors knowing...Geeze, the things I've been told!

A very good read, with one curious error:
. . . the 9mm Parabellum, which has a terminal velocity just above supersonic speeds in its standard loading.
Surely he meant to write muzzle velocity.

"Have you ever heard a car without a muffler? The reason it was so much louder was because the expanding gases from the exhaust were escaping the tailpipe at velocities beyond the speed of sound. The gases were creating a supersonic shock wave while exiting the exhaust pipe."

I have a lot of trouble believing this. I am not claiming it is untrue, but I'd like to see confirming evidence.

My wife is a gaming geek, and we actually have this book. The majority of the stuff in it is crapola, but you can find some nuggets of truth in it.
