Our economy couldn't function normally without our illegal aliens, much less the legal ones.

Right.

After a little bump in the road, our economy might just function better than normal.

Reviewing the pictures of the 9/11 hijackers, many dress quite neatly, they shaved all their facial hair, of course, and many of them could easily pass for Italian, Greek, Armenian, etc.

Simply traveling under false names and passports would get them through. People need to stop kidding themselves that Arabs (or Muslims) for that matter have a big "A" or "M" branded on their forehead. There's no simplistic narrow profiling answer.

Thanks for your informative post, but it raised a couple of questions:

The millirem-range exposures you might have got if you camped at the plant boundary for the duration of the accident (which no one did), presented a risk smaller than that for driving on the local highways any reasonable distance.

Although the nature of radiation allows it to penetrate certain walls and windows, isn't much of the longer-term danger from the fallout(in a form of micro-ash)? And since length of exposure is a critical factor, wouldn't the total exposure in a sealed(to an extent) evacuating automobile be less than staying put(especially if you don't have a basement that can be effectively sealed yet vented)? Sure there would be heightened temporary exposure, but unless you were fleeing downwind, your escape from most of the concentration of fallout would be in hours or a day at most, rather than for many days. BTW, although you could never completely seal a car's interior, wouldn't taping over the vents with a waterproof-seal type of duct tape substantially reduce fallout exposure? I've read that food in sealed containers is not susceptible to fallout, just be sure to wash the container off before opening. Having lived in the Harrisburg area, I always had in the back of my mind an idea of potential evacuation routes just in case, rather than sitting in the midst.

OBTW, to those who still believe flight 93 might have been aimed at a nuke plant, the only real likelihood would have been as a backup target. One of the heroes stated on the phone that they had either been told or had overheard that the on board terrorists were going to attack DC.

Of course it would. Don't be so afraid. Besides, I wasn't even thinking about the economy when I stated: "Its better to make every effort for safety, than have the potential for hundreds of thousands of dead and very sick Americans".

We would get by just fine, but I think you can relax, as I don't think the beltway parties have any desire to secure our borders or enforce our immigration laws.

That Atta guy looked like Frankenstein in his published photos.

His beady little black eyes looked like the lifeless eyes of a shark.

And that Reid guy looked pretty scary to me.

Not to mention North African Arabs, such as Moussaoui, many of whom look essentially identical to American Blacks...Moussaoui is the spitting image of former NBA Center Moses Malone.

Me too. How about seat wired with 440? They would never suspect that. You could zap a hijacker.

John, the reason people have historically been wary of others who do not look like them or speak like them, is possibly a fit evolutionary adaptation; such a reaction would have enabled a member of one group to instantly recognize an outsider--without the need for a compterized Tribal ID card.

250+ comments into this. Here you go:

Al Qaeda may be planning new U.S. attacks, officials say

Nuclear plants, Seattle landmark possible targets
From Barbara Starr
CNN Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Al Qaeda operatives apparently have been casing the United States for possible targets of future attacks, U.S. officials said, drawing that conclusion after finding photos and illustrations of U.S. landmarks and power plants in Afghanistan caves and safe houses.

In a related development, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission earlier this month sent a memo to U.S. nuclear power plants, warning that terrorists were plotting to crash a commercial U.S. jetliner into a nuclear power plant somewhere in the United States.

The discoveries highlight how serious terrorists are, President Bush said.

"We found some of their aspirations in terms of creating harm for America," he said this week during a speech to a senior citizens volunteer group Florida. "For example, they targeted some of our citizens or some of our infrastructure."

U.S. forces found a picture of the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington, in one location, sources said, and drawings of nuclear power facilities were discovered in Afghanistan.

Washington state, officials said, was apparently a prime al Qaeda target. Two weeks ago, the intelligence community issued a new threat assessment based on the discoveries and warning of possible al Qaeda attacks in the United States and overseas, U.S. officials said.

Officials emphasize they have no specific intelligence about timing or location of any attack.

"I think it is fair to say if we had specific information about the timing and place of a particular attack, we would get that to the authorities lightning quick," FBI Director Robert Mueller said Thursday when asked about the matter.

Sources said an "assessment of intent" report was based in part on drawings of nuclear power facilities discovered during searches of suspected al Qaeda sites around Afghanistan.

The documents suggested al Qaeda -- whose fighters have been on the run since the fall of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan -- had been looking at possibly crashing an airplane into a power plant in Washington state.

A senior member of al Qaeda underscored those concerns when he told interrogators that plans had been made to hijack a civilian jetliner and crash it into a nuclear plant somewhere in the country, the NRC said.

In a January 23 memo distributed to each of the nation's 103 nuclear plants, the commission indicated that a team on the ground in the United States was to select the plant to be struck. The group would divert the plane into a tall building if a military plane tried to intercept the flight, the memo said.

Overseas targets

U.S. military intelligence also is concerned about new intercepts and other intelligence gathered over the last few weeks, suggesting a possible attack against a military target overseas.

Washington Gov. Gary Locke has downplayed the possibility of an attack against his state.

Locke said state officials were informed last week of the existence of the photograph, which featured the top half of the Space Needle from a distance and appeared to be a "tourist picture."

"Federal officials assured us that Washington state is not under any credible threat of any attack," Locke said Wednesday. However, he said, Seattle police were notified of the discovery.

Originally built for the 1962 World's Fair, the Space Needle is Seattle's most recognizable landmark. Rising 605 feet above downtown, the structure has an observation deck and a restaurant.

Mueller said the FBI presence has been reduced in Afghanistan. He said between two and 10 agents remain in the country. Their duties include interviewing detainees.

He said any documents recovered in Afghanistan that may relate to terrorist plots go to a "combined team" involving the military, CIA and FBI for study.

How many will listen to you? It may take what you describe before they will.

I think it is too late to do what you say is necessary. Too late. And I have a nuke plant 45 miles away ... and I live in the outskirts of a big city.

May God help us!

CNN was just talking about this ...the info is coming from a SENIOR Al-Qaeda operative

Thats just it though. They are all talk. They may try to attack us worse then they did on 9/11 but for some reason I find it hard to believe they will ever succeed. I know it is just positive thinking and there is no gaurentee that I am right.

How far downwind will people be affected?

Depends on the release term. For example, with the TMI-II release, the safest thing to do, statistically speaking, was to stay put. The millirem-range exposures you might have got if you camped at the plant boundary for the duration of the accident (which no one did), presented a risk smaller than that for driving on the local highways any reasonable distance.

This is a load of CRAP. Don't expect to get the truth from the propaganda ministry. During the TMI release the lamestream media asked "How much radiation are people near the plant being exposed to?" and the comforting answer was "It's equivalent to a chest x-ray." What they didn't tell you was that there's a big difference between the instantaneous dose rate and total accumulated dose. Hanging around TMI was like climbing into an x-ray booth, turning it on, and sitting there for a week with the machine running. No thanks..

"recruiting Muslims and other non-Arabs"

I heard this report on Fox. What I want to know is what could possibly motivate non-Arabs to take part in something like this? It is illogical.

I recall that there were some White Supremicist nuts who cheered on the events of 9/11 and have basically the same aims as fanatical Muslims do where Jews and Israel are concerned. However, it does seem far-fetched. (If you're into tin foil hats, there are more than a few FReepers who believe that the OKC bombings had an Iraqi or Middle Eastern connection that was covered up.)
