Do Conservatives Favor Public Education?
FR | 1/31/02 | OWK

Posted on 01/31/2002 8:34:56 AM PST by OWK

In a discussion in THIS thread, a Freerepublic poster identifying himself as a conservative made the following comments concerning public education:

Public schools are not much in dispute except among the lunatic fringe of the lunatic fringe and their haters generally are not enlightened spiritually or otherwise.

Thus, spiritually inclined people understand that the establishment of school systems to train the citizens of the future is very important and cannot be entirely done by private endeavors.

Most of the attackers of public schools simply don't know what they are talking about.

Millions of children are educated every year successfully by them.

As a matter of curiosity, I’d like to know whether the majority of conservatives on FR, generally agree or disagree with the poster’s position on the issue.

I disagree with that poster..many folks think the best way to improve public ed is to support/use alternatives, ie private/parochial or home school.

Your link comes up "bad request".

As far as agree or disagree.

I won't send my child to a public school.

A little more context would be appreciated...

But...

This conservative (educated in public schools, I should add) is all in favor of public schools, but I can find no mention of schools in the US Constitution; ergo, public school funding should come from the states and localities (if allowed by their respective constitutions and charters; I cannot imagine they would be). We all know that no federal funding comes without strings.

I should also point out that one of the most damaging forces in public schools is the National Education Association; like all unions they exceed the bounds of reason. Everyone has had teachers that have been tremendous educators, and worth their weights in gold, and should be amply rewarded. We also have known teachers that were wastes of human anatomy; these should be fired, and would be were it not for the NEA.

Millions of children are educated every year successfully by them.

If you ever knew (much less dated) a liberal 9th grade social studies teacher, you would replace the word "educated" with "indoctrinated" or "brainwashed."

Are these millions also taught reading, writing, and arithmetic? Yea, kinda.

Mark me down as for public funding of education, but not government (public) schools.

Who are you and why do you care?

The public school system, either intentionally or unintentionally, indoctrinates children into viewpoints that parents may not necessairly agree with.

I for one, homeschool.

I am the great and powerful Oz, and I care because it is my nature to care.

Jefferson and Adams were both in favor of public schools, weren't they? I am not opposed to a public school, but I don't like the way the funding is allocated. It should be student-centered funding, not institution-centered, if you see what I mean.

agree with all you said. The schools, insofar as they ever advanced an appropriate agenda, have been successfully subverted for many years now and operate for only two reasons.

One: to separate children from any teachings they may have absorbed at home or church that goes against socialism; and Two: to provide jobs for as many socialists(voters for Democrat candidates) as is possible. Hence the proliferation of the many imaginary "learning disabilities"; spreading belief in this sort of thing builds support for hiring "experts" to deal with it.

The Constitution doesn't (read: didn't) permit the federal government to collect taxes for, or spend money on education. That duty is in the realm of the state government...I personally would hope that the state would have the wisdom to leave ALL aspects of education up to the township level of government...but of course I know better.

Parents should have choice. Public, private or home. I don't mind my tax-dollars being used to fund an efficient and effective local public school system , but the key word is local here. I don't want to see any Federal involvement at all. Do away with the Dept. of Education and bust the teacher's Union's up. How's that?

While I certainly can't speak for the majority, my opinion of the public school system is very low. This is based on the quality of applicants interviewed I have interviewed for jobs. They just don't know much. This opinion is also based upon reading news reports related to test score comparisons between US students and students elsewhere in the world. Finally, it doesn't take a lot of conversation with, say, high school students to realize that they don't know much compared to what I had to learn in the 1960s.

Couple this with the rather bone-headed display of ineptness on the part of school adminitrators over such things as "Tweety Bird" keychains and moral issues; and, there is no source of rational judgement for children to emulate. On the other hand, school time appears to be grooming students to become good little socialists with only scorn for the principles on which this Nation were founded.

Anyone who believes that the public school system is doing an adaquate job has simply adopted that stance without consulting reality.
