"2.1 billion over 10 years"

Oh, only $2,100,000,000? I'm so relieved!

Republicans can kiss their base goodbye. I'm sure he'll get most back by pandering to them at some point in '03, but till then he'll be the biggest Democrat there ever was.

"2.1 billion over 10 years" is chump change...and if it helps to elect congressional candidates in 2002, I'm all for it.

LOL! If it someone else's money, any amount is "chump change".

Of course, the democrats will offer twice as much money ($4 billion). Bush will agree. Then the democrats will promise $8 billion next election.

Bottom line:

$4 billion is spent.
The parasites will still vote for the higgest bidder (democrats)
Conservatives like yours truly will either not vote for the Republicans or vote reluctantly for them while witholding financial support and volunteer time.

That was for Sabertooth, the guy who wants the Dumocraps to win the 2004 election.

Ah, so your incoherence was directed at me.

The last thing I want is the Democrats to win. The last thing I am is a Libertarian. I've got a streak of the small "l," but I left that fool party years ago and won't go back.

Further, look how many times I've said that I won't leave the Republican Party over this.

But I'm not happy that President Bush and the Republicans are taking their poll standings and spitting into the wind. This is wrong, and politically stupid.

I won't have my vote taken for granted.

I agree with you that ideally, we wish we could end the food stamp program, but remember, hunger hurts. We can't end the food stamp program until people don't need it. And the WIC program is indispensible.

We definitely need to cut out welfare waste, fraud, and abuse but for the short term, even now military families need these subsistence programs, Appalachian families too.

"It's all about the big tent, baby! Compromise a li'l here, a li'l there...it's all good! I just need to compromise so I can get enough votes to secure my situation. THEN I'll act on principle...OK?"

We almost ended up in the United Socialist States of America under Al Gore!

We're headed that direction under Bush, just not as fast. Bush, contrary to what people want to hear, supports bigger government.

A house divided will not stand. You can try to divide the base, but to your own dimise.
Want a dumocrap in 2004? Keep up the good work.

I've seen the Bush Administration (Carl Rove) do this with the illegal alien rumors, remember how everyone was complaining about his plans to grant amnesty to 3 million illegals?, we saw 3 to 4 articles a day from the New York Times trashing him over that plan, but the only thing he ever said in public was "We are keeping all options open" and once he stirred up enough democrats and could show a few tapes where the RATS denounced the illegals, he backed off.

Carl Rove is behind these traps for the RATS, he and Bush know the RATS cannot resist the opprotunity to blast him, we will hear Daschle saying, "This plan is irresponsible considering the shape of our economy, even some members of his own party don't support this idea, and we will fight it all the way," Of coarse the RATS will want to lead the charge in condemning something that was only SAID to be announced, If you look closely, there is not a single quote by the President, only a quote from Daniels.

This will in effect be the democrats fault why a Bill that supported food stamps for immigrants was shot down. Thus you have your cake and eat it too. You can always say you supported the bill but the democrats killed it. George W. Bush once said he was a student of Reagans politics. Reagan used this tactic many times. When all was said and done Ronald Reagan would say "It's far easier to win back the voter's from the right wing of the party, than it is the to win support from the left."

Yeah it's a shrewd political move, maybe even neccessary.
I'd even accept that, given the welfare state we already have, that it's only fair to give legal aliens benefits after five years.

But it is still pandering, and we're trying to reduce welfare.

Bush just pumped $26 billion into the Department of Education's bloated budget; now he is proposing to reverse the progress the GOP has made since 1996. Republicans complained for decades about welfare queens driving Cadillacs until Clinton signed the Welfare Reform Act in 1996. Leave it to a Republican to do the Democrats' dirty work: Bush now wants to put 800,000 immigrants back on the public dole and make them dependent on the government.

With Republicans like these, who needs Democrats?

"There's a war in Washington, and you're either with us, or against us."

Wow. We've moved from Food Stamps to Terrorism just like that.

You're either with the Food Stamp program or you're with the Terrorists, according to concerned about politics.
