I saw it and enjoyed it, but gawsh I gotta read the books so I can understand it. Especially after hearing Alan Keyes extolling Tolkien's writing the other night.

Gezzzz, sultan; I think here's one of those rare cases whereby this film & it's visuals can really help those who've not yet read the book.
I only say that, because the motion picture followed the story line exceptionally well; omitting *only* smallish details.
Details one who'd read the book might actually consider minutia, even.
Which had the Director chose to emphasize?
Those points would've served only to detract from the much bigger story -- this EVIL, very magical ring.
Would've certainly bogged-down this film & made it much longer, yet.
In that respect alone the Editing was simply masterful!!
Now imagine the images created for you having had to be composed solely within your mind's eye, based on the written word, alone?
That's how most of us knew this book, its characters & places.
This film did one's imagination one better, sultan; & that's an accomplishment of immense proportions, these days.
In the old days when you & I were growing up, for instance?
Listening to a love song was so-much sweeter; since, if ya had a sweetheart at the time?
One could think about the sentiments expressed in said song, in their own way, in the context of their gal.
Unlike today; whereby music videos essentially attempt to *plant* an image in one's mind concerning any intended meaning?
The annoying visuals telling one what to think & effectively shunt-out an *individual's* imagination -- personal interpretation.
IMO: not good a'tall; since art is all about the viewer!!
Not the artist themselves; as all-too-many who'd call themselves an, "artist" like to think? :o)
This film is a totally different case altogether; an extremely rare instance of available technology being applied to create something bigger than one's imagination.
Plus; the past years have seen movies make legends of certain actors; Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Steve McQueen, Arnold Schwartzenegger, Al Pacino to name a few.
In each instance it was the film, Direction, story which granted the actor the *Legendary* status.
That's not easy, y'know; & as such?
We've not seen too many *Legends* made in the past decade, per se.
Well, this motion picture will make Legends of the players we watched in the roles of these various characters.
The BIGGEST suprise of 'em all for me had to be the SLEEPER, stellar performance turned-in by none-other than, Liv Tyler.
So sweet, fresh, electrifyingly *alive* I fell for her right there & then.
This dazingly pretty, sensuous young beauty has a brilliant future in motion pictures; make no mistake about that.
And that in spite of my JADED opin of her *Daddy*, & my supicions about Elvin women? ;^)
...an exception to the rule was this entire film; & then some.
BTW, I also perked up when Liv Tyler was on screen, but if I recall, she was only in a very few scenes.
Skip "The Hobbit" and dive right into the LOTR...you'll get enough of a synopsis about Bilbo in the opening pages. Then, once you've absorbed Tolkien's talents with the trilogy, check out "The Silmarillion" wherein the Legends of Middle-Earth are explained. It may seem like the Brothers Karamazov at times with all the elven sub-sects, the dwarves' family trees and the Good Men and Evil Men, but "The Silmarillion" explains Iluvatar, Beren Erchamion, and Luthien the Fair and so many other great stories. IMHO, it'll add another layer of understanding to yer already prodigious FReepin' abilities.

Amen, Bro' and I plan to do a lot more of it. You and I are in a position where we can see the activities of the Virginia capitol from practically being next door. Some Friday at lunchtime we should position ourselves on the Capitol grounds and buttonhole a few of our General Assembly critters. Have you had the experience of dining in the public Capitol Cafeteria? The critters are scurrying around like cockroaches, trying to look important. It's just fun to watch. And just maybe we could greet that RAT-wannabe Chichester!
