"The fundamentalists of the left have used the tragedy of the fall to renew their assault on faith in America. The Mormons are a handy target, because they are both visible and different.

Which is why all people of faith are called on to reject appeals to prejudice of the sort that the Los Angeles Times tossed off without so much as a backward glance. If the Times can get away with labeling Utah a "theocracy," then surely ever other newspaper in America can do the same.

If the Times can frontload a front page article with critics' quotes, then every media organization in the country can do the same if the issue is Catholicism, Pentecostal practice or any of the debates within denominations over gay ordination, the role of women, etc.

In short, since the Times has no qualms about rolling the Mormons, don't expect any different treatment from the same paper or newsroom culture when your religious beliefs enter the target zone..." - Hugh Hewitt

Hugh's concern with the shabby treatment of the Mormon church bring to mind the famous quote by Martin Niemoeller
"In Germany they came first for the Communist, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up."

It is time for ALL of us to speak up for the Mormons.
SHAME ON YOU, L.A. TIMES!!!
STOP this attack on religion in America!

I too have found them to be 100% upstanding. Not only that, they also tend to be very tolerant of other religions. I just tell them I am a happy Roman Catholic and they leave me alone. Kind of ironic in that they are bashed for being overbearing in their missionary work by the mainstream press when in fact they are genuinely cordial. Maybe it is just my experience but I would much rather sit down to break bread with a dozen Mormon missionaries as opposed to one LA Times reporter.

Hewitt has hit paydirt with this article. It's right on the money. I am not a fan of the Catholic church, but it drives me crazy to see it trashed the way it is. The same goes for other churches. If you'll note, the same trick that is used on conservatives is used on churches and their memebers.

Can't tell you how many times I've seen a church introduced as "fundamentalist" or "activist" or by some other qualifier.

Religion is being demonized. It's hold over people is too great a challenge to a police state. It's hold is too treatening to socialism and it's own diety, if you will.

I don't like the direction this nation is headed one bit, because we've seen these indicators before, just prior to the darkest times in human history. Will we avoid those times. Signs don't look good.

We all know the L.A. Times is commie toilet paper to wipe one's arse with. They only believe in freedom of the press when it suits their communist agenda. That's why they're losing money. Nobody's buying their toilet paper.
