Officials from all 50 states have agreed to cooperate on upgrading driver's license security features, giving momentum to efforts to turn the licenses into de facto national identity cards.

The state officials may also seek $70 million or more in federal funds to study issues like how they might include data such as fingerprints or digital photographs on the driver's licenses, which are carried by more than 200 million Americans.

This state has a picture ID card that works for writing checks at the supermarket for those who don't have a Driver's License.

For illegals it makes no difference if they have no CA USA Drivers License because the police will accept a fany oreign ID. (Which could be bogus). This will only be a requirement for the citizens that belong here.

So what good would such a license be is nobody enforces existing laws?

This is never going to work, unless they require everyone to bring birth certificates or passports when the apply for the new licenses. Then, of course, we can require driver's licenses or id when voting.

BTW, I fought the 12 person, unelected commission known as the Pineland Commission. They "regulate" more that 20% of the geographical land mass in the state of NJ. After attending numerous meetings, and nearly getting arrested countless times for my effort, these 12 unelected goons remain as strong as ever.

,,, over two years back New Zealand shifted from a "lifetime" driver licence system which involved the issue of a waxy bit of computer printed paper to a card licence like the US uses - only the new card system involved capturing a digital image of the holder. Yes, it involved production of a passport, full birth certificate or firearms licence; a phone bill, bank statement or similar to confirm your present address and each applicant renewing had to undergo an eye test as well.

This resulted from the first driver licence review in seventy years in this country. There was a lot of talk about the new card lending itself easily to a de facto ID concept but they crafted legislation around that to ensure police could only ask a driver at the wheel to produce their licence.

I'm betting that in time that legislation will be eroded.

Kind of like how a social security card was floated out decades ago, with the promise that it would not be used for ID purposes.

Part of that is the ignorance of the American public. It is illegal in the original statutes to require anyone to use their true SSN. But most people don't force the issue and request alternate ID. On the VA driver's licence application it's in the fine print, but most don't invoke that option. But as far as a national ID, you'll miss those that don't drive and minors and those driving illegally.
