Finally. Looks like they held their cards just right. Methinks they had a sense that the Dems would eventually break out all the squabbling, such as the Enron accusations, so they held their fire until the Dems unloaded. Daschle's tax cheap-shot speech last week was the breaking of the cease fire. So now in the midst of the sound and fury, Bush not only shows that he can play hardball, but also can time it for max effect. This will get lost in the howl of Enron and accusation de jour. Sure there will be lots of whining, but its not the sole focus of concern.

This heartens my belief in the Bush team's political skill, and increases my expectations that this Enron bull will be effectively muted, and potentially turned into a backfire. A hunch says it will be handled similarly to the stemcell issue. We'll see.

This is beautiful. After Clinton's repeated use of recess appointments, there is nothing the dembulbs can make of this, and these are 2 great appointments. YEAH!

You don't need a reputable to source to know that. It is common knowledge and has been done as long as we have had presidents.

From Reuters:
Bush to Bypass Senate, Give Jobs to Reich, Scalia

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush will use his authority to install two contentious nominees during the Senate's holiday recess, including Otto Reich as assistant secretary of state for western hemisphere affairs, a senior administration official said on Friday.

The other recess appointment will be Eugene Scalia, a conservative labor attorney and son of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, to the post of solicitor general at the Labor Department, the official said.

"Both positions have been vacant for close to a year and the Senate, by failing to act on either nomination, left the president with no other option but to exercise his constitutional right to appoint them both," the official told Reuters.

"And I'm looking forward to at least 3, and let's pray 7, more years from this fine President. The man has cahonas(sp?) and knows when to use them.

I think the demonRATs really thought our President wouldn't have the cahonas(sp?) to make recess appointments. Whew! Is our President smackin' the dems around or what? GO DUBYA!!

Both had a very good chance to be approved. Daschle would not let them have an up or down vote on the floor. Bush had no choice. It would have been a different matter if he appointed them after the Senate voted them down.
