Racial Changes Made in Ground Zero Firefighter Tribute
It happened more than two weeks ago, but at least one New York City firefighter is still steaming over the politically correct changes made to a sculpted tribute to the firefighter heroes who raised the American flag at Ground Zero just hours after the World Trade Center was leveled on 9/11.
The three flag-raising fireman, as depicted in a widely publicized photograph taken by New Jersey's Bergen Record, were white.
But when a statue commemorating the event was unveiled at the FDNY's Brooklyn headquarters on Dec. 21, the three white firefighters had been replaced by a more racially diverse trio of unidentified Fire Department staffers.
The $180,000 statue is the first memorial to the 343 firefighters and emergency medical personnel killed Sept. 11, reported Newsday at the time.
The racial modifications came at the behest of Fire Department officials, artists with Studio EIS, located on York Street in the Dumbo section, told the paper.
Our firefighter-reader complained:
"What Firefighters McWilliams, Johnson and Eisengrein did inspired the people of the United States in one of its darkest hours. ... This photograph is as sacred as the famous photograph and sculpture of the U.S. Marines raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. ...
"The 343 firefighters [who] were killed at the WTC (54 of whom I knew personally) consisted of all races and creeds.
"But the fact is that the three firefighters who hoisted the Flag on the afternoon of Sept. 11th at the WTC were white and should be depicted as such."
We couldn't have said it better ourselves.
Regards,
No, but if I ever do, I'll make sure to hold the ladder for her. 8^)
You're right. That picture should be kept as is -- so that we can never forget that even if you have plenty of money to hire the best doctors, cigarettes can still kill you. Let's hope they don't start air brushing the cigarettes out of George Harrison's photos either.
This is a lie. The statue was created from the famous photo and sittings of the Marines that survived the war and the likeness of each Marine and the one Navy Corpsman were kept as close as possible to reality including measuring the statues to ensure heights were correct and proportional. (There were 5 Marines and 1 corpsman who raised the flag on Iwo Jima)
The wife of a Historian called in and stated it.
She is an idiot or a liar trying to change history and justify a pc statue in NY.
MPD also covers Mao's China, Nazi Germany, Russia, and Cuba.
I walked through the Smithsonian museum of American History on the mall in DC 2 weeks ago.
You would not believe the size of the exhibit on the interned Japanese-Americans in WWII, complete with life size replicas of Japanese GI's manning a howitzer. It was by far the largest WWII exhibit in the place, the PC dripping from every display case.
The FDNY should take matters into their own hands and run the godamned statue over with a truck.
No pictures of Allied Soldiers on the Bataan Death March? Just pictures of Japanese suffering at the hands of westerners? It figures...

==Reno, and Dashole !
They raised and re-raised the flag a couple times to get a good picture there.
But it is sacred, this is just as bad as wiping the black victim out of the Boston Massacre, which was done in a piece of pro-Revolutionary propaganda.
They got their foot in the door a long time ago. They now are in the room and they rule.
By the way, Fox News reported this tonight on Special Report with Brit Hume.
What is the solution? I say ridicule it.
Are you sure one or two of them aren't of "Hispanic" origin? :-) How about Italian?
