THE folks at Msnbc are talking to former Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Alan Keyes about hosting a 10 p.m. show up against Fox News' new hire, Greta Van Susteren. Meanwhile, Van Susteren, a lawyer before her O.J. Simpson commentary turned her into a CNN star, reportedly has penned an eight-page memo detailing CNN's demerits. She plans to keep the document secret as long as CNN doesn't try to paint her as an ungrateful traitor.

I believe what they are saying is that his campaign remains open,
and he's still collecting money from anyone stupid enough to send it,
even though the election was over a year ago.
I haven't fact checked this myself,
but it's been alleged on many Keyes threads recently.

Exodus, what Amelia is alluding to is the common practice of virtually all campaigns....
that is, staying open and collecting pledged money or other monies to pay off campaign debts.
John Glen, took years and years to pay off his senatorial campaign debts...
it is a very common practice of which the FEC is quite aware
inasmuch as they continue getting reports until after campaigns are closed out.
I rather doubt that those who made pledges of financing
consider themselves stupid for honoring committments.
Amelia, I'm sure you already know this, but seeing as how I used your words,
I figured you should be flagged.

Thanks, Rowdee.
Yes, I did know about that practice.
Amelia, I overlooked your post, I'm sorry.
I'm getting a little snowed under on this huge thread.
What my opponents are saying
is that Keyes was a horrible,
un-principled man, to dare running
for the Republican nomination all the way
up to the last minute, never giving up,
instead of conceding
to the almost God-like goodness
of candidate Bush.
But you bring up a good point:
As it was, the rather sub rosa endorsement was probably rather meaningless, since those supporters of Keyes who decided to support Bush probably had already done so long before, given how poltically engaged and aware the rather small band of Keyes supporters actually was. Just my thoughts.
Well put. This brings up one of my favorite subjects...the 'Keyes people'. They without a doubt think for themselves...this was the campaign for SELF-GOVERNMENT, for goodness sakes. Forget about Alan for a minute, (if you can)...I know a multitude of these folks, from sea to shining sea; and they are among the finest I have ever had the privelege to meet in my entire life. Upstanding Christians and patriots. In my book, they are the cream of the crop. And for those of you who like to slime them...I'll have you know that no group of people worked harder to defeat Al Gore.
That's why I get upset at these Keyes-bashing orgies...they slander my friends...and I will stand up for these good people til my dying day. I love them.
Those who were there know that I fought for them every step of the process, too.
better than us morally
better than us intellectually
and more patriotic than us
I'm saying when you claim to be morally superior -- you need to be ready to back that up with morally superior behavior, including the way you behave on message boards
Well, well, a crybaby in a brawl. If after everything that has been said in this thread you consider this abusive, you should change your name to Silly, except that that is already taken. In case you didn't notice the posting warning is Please: NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts..
In the post you cite, there was no profanity, no personal attack, no racism, and no violence. This is a thread in which many people, including you, who was the first one in this thread to bring up the name 'Hitler', have used strong words for hundreds of posts. Now for someone who started this to suddenly get shocked that they are being disagreed with, makes it look like you are used to being in a situation in which no one dares speak back to you.

"The flame war WAS started and kept going by the Keysters.
I don't need to lie and I have a good memory. .
Go read those threads. : - )

"But Momma, He started it!!"
Not good enough, nopardons.
Name calling is rude.
Rudeness is not an acceptable response to rudeness.
Er, what the hell are you talking about 'admitting' this or that? I didn't think he was 'running' after the convention gave it to Bush? Just because he didn't endorse when Howlin or PKM thought or think he should doesnt mean diddly squat!
You wrote: " If not, why did he stay so long. What was he trying to influence from July to November?"...
See above....and why don't you drop him an email....ask why he bothers to breath, why he ran in the first place, why he didn't get out when you thought he should, why he stayed til the convention, why he didn't endorse Bush before he did, why he didn't actively campaign for Bush....or any other questions you desire to ask him....hell, even ask him about his wife....that was tried by someone on another thread where Keyes' name was bandied about!
I was talking about PERSONAL ATTACKS on fellow FREEPERS ! Though, in all honesty, yes, there have been ( MANY ) Bush bashing / trashing threads, wherein Keysters have NOT taken the " high road ". and done much of the slash and burn posts.
Are you asking me to PROVE that Keysters have NOT done either / both of these things ? ARE YOU ? If so, then I question your query. WHY DON'T YOU KNOW WHAT HAS OR HAS NOT BEEN DONE ?
As the following AP article reports, Ambassador Keyes has withdrawn his candidacy, which will be formally filed with the FEC next week, and has indicated his guarded support for a Bush/Cheney ticket.
Amb. Keyes remains a foremost conservative leader in his own right, and will continue to forcefully present the cause of Reagan Republicanism to the GOP and the nation . . .
So he announced that he dropped his run AND announced that he supported Bush/Chaney in July. Prior to the GOP convention.
Haven't claimed to be anything. Free exchange of ideas, eh? And how, do tell, have I behaved? I implore the interested to track my posts.
Better and better. Now if we only had a text and context of the statement of "guarded support," we could put this thread to bed, right?
And yes again, the relevancy of this is close to nill, but hey, it is fun.
I did
So, why do you think that Keyes and his supporters are better than everyone else?
It is you claiming that Keyes didn't endorse Bush in July.
It is up to you to produce some evidence...something far better than a document of whatever provenance from October where Keyes sys he supports Bush.
Did you tell anyone you supported Bush in October? I certainly hope you did. Did you each time tell them the date of your coming aboard??
Come on.
I was on the floor in Philly. The entire political establishment there...thousands and thousands...knew that Keyes had endorsed Bush. Why do you want to rewrite history. To prove some petty little point? To prove how right, and how righteous you are?
Sorry, but you're wrong, and you are treating people in a fashion they don't deserve to be treated by anyone, much less a fellow Christian and FReeper.
