Pat Buchanan is aware that potential readers of his new book already either adore him or disdain everything he writes "because I am the one writing it."
So in The Death of the West: How Dying Populations and Immigrant Invasions Imperil Our Country and Civilization (Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin's Press, $25.95), the ex-presidential candidate and conservative pundit is trying to back up his apocalyptic projections with facts and figures provided by such disparate sources as "Russian leader Mr. Putin, a British archbishop and the United Nations. By drawing on what anyone would have to consider neutral sources, this makes my message far more powerful."
The gist of The Death of the West's messages:
Low birthrates are decimating the population of almost every European country - by 2050, only one-tenth of the world's population (America included) will be of European descent.
The unchecked influx of immigrants into America, legal and otherwise, is gradually handing the nation over to insurgents who come to force their foreign values on us rather than accepting ours.
Political correctness on the part of unwitting Americans plays into the hands of those who intend to obliterate our culture.
The events of Sept. 11 may provide enough of a wake-up call, Buchanan says, to make "the death of the West" only a threat rather than a certainty.
"The book is about a point I've been making for a long time, that the West is dying," Buchanan says during a lengthy phone conversation. "If we don't change how we do things, we'll be gone by the middle of this century, if not before. The horror of Sept. 11, I think, awoke a lot of Americans to new realities. It's a healthy thing to remember there are people out there who want to destroy us."
In Buchanan's opinion, it took terrorist attacks on New York City and the Washington, D.C., area to drive that message home to an American public more intent on hedonism than heroism.
"The '90s were a time of prosperity I've likened to the 1920s," Buchanan says. "The '20s were about money, drinking, jazz. The '90s were money, drugs, rock. The '20s ended with the stock market crash, the Depression, then on to Hitler, Tojo, Stalin. The 1990s ended on Sept. 11. We're at the kind of place Walter Lippmann called 'a plastic moment,' a time when people can change their destiny. I hope this book helps that. I'm not so much predicting these awful things will happen as saying, 'This is what the end is if the numbers remain the same.' "
Not that he holds much hope: "To many American young people, people like me belong to a bad old era. They've been taught that in school, indoctrinated in it. They want to say goodbye to the way our generation did things. This is why I don't think much will be done about the problems we face."
Buchanan acknowledges he's saying things that most Americans would prefer not to hear and that many condemn as racist and inflammatory.
"My response is that it's too late in the day for political correctness," he says. "After Sept. 11, with those acts perpetrated by people we literally welcomed into this country, Americans ought to be aware there is such a thing as too much diversity, too much welcoming. Look: I've said that if you bring 100 Zulu tribesmen into Virginia and 1 million British, the British would be assimilated more comfortably. I base that on those British coming into an American culture based on English law and tradition. And when I said that, something that seems like a simple statement, I've been accused of racism."
Now, Buchanan says, "I could substitute Iranians or Saudis for the Zulu, and people might understand." And, he adds, originally citing the Zulus was in no way racist "because I'm friends with the Zulu ruler. It's just a matter of acknowledging the differences in culture."
Potential immigrants should be judged by one measure, Buchanan adds: "Are they likely to carry on our culture, which makes America a unique country and civilization? Or are they not?"
Population explosions in Islamic, African and Latin American nations are coinciding with a decline in the U.S. birthrate, Buchanan notes, citing U.N. studies. To bolster "American cultural" numbers, Buchanan concludes in The Death of the West, American women should be encouraged via tax breaks to increase the country's population: "A free society cannot force women to have children, but a healthy society can reward those who preserve it by doing so."
Though he doesn't broach the subject in The Death of the West, in conversation Buchanan is willing to also discuss his own future.
"Politically speaking, I ran two times for the Republican nomination," he says. "We came close in '96, and we'd have gotten it instead of [Bob] Dole with one more primary win. In 2000, we tried to create a new party. It didn't work. So my political career is probably over."
But Buchanan has no intention of abandoning public debate.
"I've done my best to say the things I thought necessary, and I intend to keep writing books and to keep speaking out," he says. "I love doing it. I hope the Lord gives me 25 more years. If people don't like me or my message, well, that's not my concern. Political correctness is almost an impenetrable shield of basic realities."

Nah, Iceberg only had to shave off his cerebral cortex once -- they don't grow back.
Then it is ironic that only among ethnic Europeans, particularly in America, do we find a contingent of people who believe that race consciousness is fascism (another overused word). What do think the Japanese think about keeping their culture intact? LOL. Or how about the Chinese, Mexicans, Koreans, Arabs, Indians, Persians? In all these peoples there is a far greater seriousness about preserving their culture than in any European ethnicity. Are these non-European races fascists too? By the way you throw around the label they must be right? How could they not be? Since the Euro-Americans are the least race conscience people on earth in fairness you should re-direct your name calling and labeling to the rest of the world that doesnt think like you. You might also ask yourself why is it that every other race and culture outside the ethnic Europeans want to keep their heritage alive for future generations? I'd say their survival instinct is far greater than ours.
********
Then it is ironic that only among ethnic Europeans, particularly in America, do we find a contingent of people who believe that race consciousness is fascism (another overused word)Gee, WRhine. What makes you think I'm an ethnic European? Are you forgetting all those non-white conservatives out there? Couldn't I be one of them?
I saw that too.
I could care less what ethnicity you are. You evaded every point I made in my post.
Massive immigration from 3rd World nations only started in earnest in the mid-1970s and has gone up exponentially since then. Given the current trends better watch closely what unfolds in the next 10-20 years when because of demographics the demoRATS garner a monopoly of power in all 3 branches of the federal government. Neither your conservative views nor anyone elses will count for much when that happens.
She was banned last night for posting an article that ridiculed the rescue workers at the WTC.
Nice crowd you run with.
Thanks for your comments. It's reassuring to know that at least one person besides myself on this thread has an IQ over that of warming ice cubes.
I will have to admit that I am amazed at the ignorance displayed on this thread. I haven't promoted the white race at the exclusion of anyone else. I simply stated that the white race should be expected to desire to exist. Now even that is taken as an example of racism.
We're not dealing with the democrat party here. We're dealing with people who claim to be moderate. We're also dealing with many people who claim to be conservative. They claim they are the bastian of conservative thought in this nation. Now I find they don't like the idea that I think my race should survive, read that exist.
Well... I don't really know what to say in response.
I don't hate any other race. I'll defend good Muslems or Arabs and anyone else to have a fair shake. I don't wish anyone or any race ill. I think that we have as much right as a predominantly white nation to expect it to remain that way as Mexico or any other nation have a right to expect their predominant race to remain intact.
I don't like talking about race, but all the leftists in this nation seem to want to do is talk about this or that race being treated unfairly. The illegal Mexican populace living in this nation are defended by the leftists. Their rights are actually raised above even that of citizens. I don't think that is right. If I break a federal law, I will have to pay dearly for it. That is not the case for illegal immigrants. Therefore I am a second class citizen, they are first class citizens. That's just the plain simple truth.
I pay dearly for medical insurance for my wife and myself. Illegal immigrants pay nothing for it. They get it for free. I do not work for money paid under the table. Every member of my family have jobs where payroll deductions are made. I have paid into Social Security for 35 years now. I haven't taken a dime out of it. I can tell you that elderly Soviet Armenians who came here in the last twenty years started drawing Social Security benefits from day one. They never worked a day in the United States.
My wife and I work in the medical field. We know a lot of people who do so. I have personally witnessed people with wads of cash wearing golden jewelery whip out a Medi-Cal card as payment for services. This was not an isolated instance.
Fraud is rampant. We recently heard of an immigrant who whipped out a state card for medical services. The clerk looked at the card and relized it was for a 79 year old male. The presenter was mid to late twenties. When she confiscated that card he pulled out a number of others. None of them were valid.
Folks. You slander people needlessly when you use the racist word too frequently. There is a basis for my taking some of the stances I have. Our citizens are good people. They have hearts of gold. They are being taken to the cleaners and our nation stolen from them. Please study up on this issue.
You have open border types well pegged Iceberg. Many of these self-proclaimed conservatives are brainwashed victims of the PC corps. and thus show little ability to reason past group think when a subject is "Taboo". Notice how few of them ever respond to an argument directly when they are faced with undeniable facts. And when confronted with the facts they seem to morph into the way democrats behave with their kneejerk "racist" and "fascist" retorts to arguments they can't win. If there is a guidepost in my life it is to follow the path truth based on real life observations. I have no use for ideas that may sound nice on the surface but conflict with reality as I see it everyday. Without the truth mankind would still be living in caves.
People that would call me a racist for that view most likely won't care that their vote has been made null and void, at least not right away. I'm not a racist I am very, extremely, intolerant, and vehemently anti-socialism. Many, far too many, immigrants have proven time an again they will vote their stomachs, more than I care to think about have no loyalty to nor desire to be American, nor do they have and understanding of what protects their freedoms, and I have no desire to have them present voiding my vote.
It seems when the worst members of our society go looking for something to give them power and yet avoid any real work, they go into politics, and to hold power the Liberals promote division and racism, half of congress should be behind bars, not passing laws they themselves ignore.
We had a dream that all that came here could find freedom and seek to do their best for themselves and America, now far too many come here for economic gain only, and maintain a deep burning hatred for the European part of society promoted by politicians, liberal skanks, news media, schools and universites. I protest the import of people that if not racist when they arrive will soon be turned that way by politicans and liberal media that want to destroy America at the worst and could care less about it's future at best. It's crazy and I refuse to be silenced by any PC agenda.
Being part Cherokee I know that cultures and peoples can come and go, part of my culture is barely hanging in there, and truth to tell it did not have alot to contribute, to be frank. I would gracefully pass the majority population to any people that are as gung ho America and it's freedoms and Constitution as I am. I do not want, and will do all in my legal power to avoid adding, to those self hating socialist members of society, new and greater numbers of America haters that despise not only the culture, which I guess can be forgiven, but also despise it's foundations, which cannot be forgiven.
Politicians and the liberal media have made the rules of the game, every race should seek political clout in competition with every other race. That is the way they promote everything, should we sit around like fools on the sidelines refusing to admit this game is in play? Jerry Brown, that fool mayor, has said that no one need apply for a city job unless they speak chinese or spanish like a native, in order to compliment the majority population there. duh If he had said this in the 70's he would have been run out of town on a rail because the majority population was of European descent.
It's distasteful to us to play this horrible game, we are not even allowed in the game as a matter of fact. But we can no longer afford to ignore the fact the game is being played and it's in the third quarter and we don't even have a man on the field. If immigration is not addressed then this game better darn well be address and loudly by someone yet everyone remains mute for fear of being labled a racist in the face of the worst racism being promoted against the citizens of this nation. It's harmful to everyone concerned, new arrivals as well as generations of natural born.
And that's the way I see it folks January 6th, 2002.
