December 28, 2001 -- THE scramble to fully identify Richard C. Reid, the man with explosives in his shoes, has turned up a probable link to John Walker, the traitor from Marin County, Calif.

The connection should cause concern about lapses in vigilance by Western investigators of Islamic terrorism.

Don't worry...practicing Catholic--I was reading your other thread--that is why I mentioned Israel and the Amen Corner. You seem to disdain both--just an observation.

Here's a bump and a thanks for the ping. I like what somebody else came up with on another thread--if this group recruits from the European prisons (Reid), doesn't it make sense that they'd recruit from dip-xxxx neo-Nazi groups too? Like the goobers at Elohim City.

Here's a link to a Le Monde article which says that Djamel Beghal, the French-born head of the cell that was supposed to blow up the U.S. embassy in Paris, who was trained at one of the training camps near Jalalabad, also belonged to Tabligh before going to Afghanistan. It was after he returned to France and was making preparations for the attack that he was arrested.

But...but...but...Professor Metcalf says "jihad" means "personal improvement." How can this be?

I guess when I take adult ed courses and go to the gym I'm committing Jihad. Let's see what happens to me when I start using that word publicly with that meaning!

BTW, since you speak French, what ever happened to that chemical plant bombing in Toulouse, France shortly after 911? At first the press said it was an accident. Then a doctor who had experience in the Middle East noted that the closest factory worker victim had shaved his body, etc., in the fashion of jihadists at work. Then his apartment was found to have been cleaned out. Then there were rumors that the French authorities wanted to hush up the connections so that they would not seem to be a target of such actions, for various machiavellian purposes. Has there been any follow up in the French press on this issue to your knowledge? I'm interested.

I saw the news you report about the Toulouse explosion, but I haven't seen anything since.

Some articles in early October, then silence! Well, who knows. If you have any interest, you can use the "suspect's" name, Hassan Jandoubi, on web searches and the like.

Happy New Year!

Le Monde hasn't published anything on Jandoubi since its article of Oct. 5.

According to this piece, the story linking Jandoubi to the Toulouse explosion was published by Le Figaro on Oct. 4 and was denied the next day by the local La Dépêche du Midi. Maybe there was nothing to the story, but it is also possible that French official sources have their reasons for wanting to deny the story.
