No longer 'Just Say No': Bush says quit drugs and fight terrorism
By Associated Press, 12/14/2001 13:52
WASHINGTON (AP) President Bush said Friday that drug users aid terrorists who get their money from global trafficking in narcotics. ''If you quit drugs, you join the fight against terrorism,'' he said.
Bush offered a new argument in the fight against drugs while signing a bill to expand a federal anti-drug program over the next five years.
''Drug abuse threatens everything, everything that is best about our country,'' he said. ''It breaks the bond between parent and child. It turns productive citizens into addicts. It transforms schools into places of violence and chaos. It makes playgrounds into crime scenes. It supports gangs at home.''
''And abroad, it's important for Americans to know that trafficking of drugs finances the world of terror, sustaining terrorists,'' the president said. The administration has linked the al-Qaida network in Afghanistan to heroin trafficking. The terrorist group, led by Osama bin Laden, is suspected in the Sept. 11 attacks on America.
The bill signed by Bush expands the Drug-Free Communities Support Program, which helps community groups reduce illegal drugs. The program's budget is about $50 million, and would almost double in five years under the bill.
''Over time, drugs rob men, women and children of their dignity and of their character,'' Bush said.
''Illegal drugs are the enemies of ambition and hope and when we fight against drugs we fight for the souls of our fellow Americans.''
I thought so much better of you.
Have YOU ever tried it?

sorry...my mistake. I appologize.
That's not what I'm refering to him saying. Yes, I think the left causes a lot of problems by stirring up racial and class animosity, and I support the statement you attribute to Ashcroft.
The statement I was refering to, from Ashcroft, was along the lines of: 'those wh scare the American people with phantoms of lost liberty are aiding the terrorists' or something to that effect.
I take great exception to that statement by the Attorney General. It is allways acceptable, it is allways the time, for a free people to question it's government when it usurps power - regardless of weather it is constitutional and justified in the end.
Why would I not? Religion is core to everything.
Don't misunderstand, I'm not criticizing the man for his mistakes. I beleive in redemption. But I also beleive in the redemption of people who aren't rich and powerfull as well, and the fact remains that people in this country are going to jail for behaviors that high officials in our government engaged in as youth, but due to their stations, get to dismiss it as "youthfull indescretion".
Not just Bush here, but many from the outgoing administration, and in our congress. It is the height of hypocrisy.
Folks don't just sit in their homes drinking booze either. Do you support alcohol prohibition?
Do you disagree with any part of this? I see this as truth, pure and simple.
In so far as this much here, it doesn't sound good, in context with his recent actions. It the people's duty to keep our government in check, and we shouldn't be critisized for it.
I don't share the position of people who are just out to disparige the Bush administration. The war is far beyond justification.
But I'm angry with the lack of concern for the constitution that led to our situation, that led to the government's failure to protect us, that is being answered with even more diminishing of our freedoms.
The government is run by people who would love to take as much power as we are willing to give them. It's worth fighting to protect it.
And the scare mongering is on the side of the government who is profiting from the fear of terrorists.
It seems to me that has been tried.

Gateway Drugs
For many teens, a progression towards using increasingly dangerous substances starts with cigarettes and alcohol, moves to marijuana and then on to other illicit drugs. When teens start to use nicotine, alcohol and marijuana, no one can predict who will go on to use other illicit drugs. What can be predicted is that , for those teens that do use these dangerous substances, there is a much greater likelihood that they will go on to use other illicit drugs.
Two important conclusions came out of this work:
The earlier a teen starts using cigarettes, alcohol and marijuana, the greater the likelihood that the teen will use other illicit drugs.
The more frequently a teen uses cigarettes, alcohol and marijuana, the greater the likelihood that the teen will use other drugs.
In general, this report found that teens who used these three substances were over 30% more likely to use other illicit drugs as compared to teens that report using none of these substances. For these reasons, alcohol, nicotine and marijuana are referred to as gateway drugs to other illicit drug use.

What if we use heroin grown by the Northern Alliance? Does that count as fighting FOR democracy?
It seems to me that has been tried. - DM
Not what I asked you.
You stated your opposition to drugs based on the potential danger posed to yourself by drug addicts driving cars on public roads. Do you favor alcohol prohibition for the same reasons or do you make a special exception for booze?
