[history]
Exactly one year ago today the Bush-Gore Florida dispute ended. In the spirit of that anniversary, the House will vote today on a bipartisan bill to help improve election procedures. The controversy over who won Florida has faded, but the issues of poor voter education and the opportunity for ballot manipulation that it raised should remain a national priority.

Good post.
I'm still of the opinion that tax day and election day should be combined. Write your check to the state and federal government and only then are you allowed to step in the voting booth.

There's only one explanation for algore's defeat that rings true for me...
God isn't quite ready to let us go to the dogs yet.

Writing a check the same day you vote might also eliminate the need for term limits

Fund? Hardly. He is one of the good guys.

P.U. This guy is pathetic. Voting illegally, that is, via motor voter laws and laws forbidding requiring proof of identity or citizenship, is a far greater problem than voting conveniently. Also, what's wrong with these two sentences written in successive paragraphs?
If more of those voters had cast ballots on the actual election day, there is evidence Mr. Gore would've picked up votes.
The Republicans might wish to join the critical scrutiny, for the best evidence suggests that early/absentee voting no longer favors the GOP and also doesn't increase turnout.

John Fund is absolutely right. We need to get this voting thing under control. It's one of the most important things you can do as a citizen, and if you can't take a half hour out of your day every couple of years to insure the people who run the country are your choice, then you shouldn't be voting. Absentee voting should only be used by those who can not get to the polls due to severe health problems or people who are temporarily out of town on voting day. There should be proof demanded that you will be out of town.
Other than that, you should either go to the polls or not vote, PERIOD.

Let's look at the issue from the Democrats' perspective. Analysts agree that Mr. Gore had a last-minute surge in support, fueled in part by negative reaction to the news of Mr. Bush's 1976 driving under the influence arrest, which hit five days before Election Day. Which reminds me, what happened to that idiot up in Maine with the duck bill cap who "conveniently" broke that story. Also what happened to judge Streaker who provided the duck-billed idiot this info? I call him Judge Streaker because back in the 70s there was a picture of him on the wire services streaking buck nekkid through a girl's school. Is Judge Streaker still on the bench?

Excellent idea. And absolutly no withholdings. You write one check at one time. That would cure us of big government and pork in one day!

I agree voting should be a snapshot
and though I would oppose a national ID card the smplified technology could be used as a voter ID card (which are currently issued without photos or cross reference)
You could walk into any polling place anywhere on election day and vote (only once) even upon local issues from the place at which you are registered
You could be ID-ed by photo or thumbprint and SS # and voter fraud would be reduced by 99% overnight
To get the Voter registration card you would simply have to offer your SS # and proof of citizenship
Run the lists against death certificates and you can also instantly monitor double voting
No more intrusive than using a bank card at an ATM
How can we hold politicians accountable for their actions when we refuse to hold voters accountable for their own eligabilty?

"...its likely conclusion is that Al Gore would only have won if highly elastic counting methods were deployed--the very sort, in fact, that Mr. Gore never asked for in court."But highly elastic recounting was the desired method, and was in fact used in the recounting that was performed in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami... that is until Bush stepped in and said, not soo fast.

thank you
I wonder what they're up to today?
