A U.S.-Based Al Qaeda 'Sleeper Cell' Was Poised to Launch a Post-Sept. 11 Attack on a Major Washington Target; Would-Be Terrorists Went Underground or Fled U.S.
NEW YORK, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- A U.S.-based cell of the Al Qaeda terror network nearly launched an attack on a major target in Washington, D.C. after September 11, Newsweek has learned. Intelligence sources say a Qaeda "sleeper cell" in the U.S. was poised to launch the attack -- perhaps against the Capitol Building. The sources believe that the FBI, in its sweep against visa violators and other illegals of Mideast backgrounds, picked up ...

We need to get this information out to the general public so they know that our government is doing its job. While not as exciting as an armed confrontation, our senators and representatives need to see that John Ashcroft and the methods GW has put in place, work! Mr. Leahy et al, need to be embarassed by their efforts to shoot this approach down.

But the important thing is, were the terrorists rights respected?

...perhaps they're still sitting in a jail somewhere. Seems we're putting together the evidence bit by bit and the plans are coming clear.
Looks like the anthrax may have been part of it....and they took off as well.

I do not understand the hand-wringing going on over "civil liberties" for the foreigners here on visas who were rounded up, particularly with this information. They're not U.S. citizens; they're guests. When their visas are up, they're supposed to leave. If not, then they need to be rounded up and deported anyway. With the present circumstances, it's obviously a pretty good bet that a lot of the expired visa-foeigners (Middle East ones) have terrorist connections (1%, to me, is a lot in this situation). Keep rounding them up!

You got the one about being voted out of the conspiracy, right?

"Intelligence sources say the would-be terrorists then went underground or fled the country. Investigators have not yet been able to identify the plotters from among the hundreds of people caught in the FBI dragnet; they're not even sure they are still in custody, according to a Newsweek Special Report in the December 17 issue of Newsweek " I have a feeling there's more to this story that the FBI feels should not be released at this time, especially to Newsweek. Overall good news though.

Too many "almosts" and "maybes" - the article is speculation bordering on fantasy.

Ashcroft saves the just and the unjust. Ashcroft does right while being trashed. Thanks Ashcroft, it can't be easy.

Tripe. Pure Bovine Excrement. They are making a claim that they stopped a terrorist act while not detailing what the act was supposed to have been or even what the target was. This is total speculation and propaganda.

Ashcroft has been put through the wringer since the first day his nomination was announced. I am impressed with his ability to take everything the liberals throw at him.

Yeah, and for his hard work in saving the hides of those working in the US Capitol , Ashcroft was repaid by the demon senators with an inquisition. The ungratefull mr. leahy is beyond credibility, this bastard is playing partisan politics while America burns.
