Berry's 'Civil Rights' Antics Expose Lib's Fears

Saturday Dec. 8, 2001; 11:03 a.m. EST Martin: Berry's 'Civil Rights' Antics Expose Lib's Fears Kevin Martin, spokesman for the conservative civil rights group Project 21, says it's no mystery why Civil Rights Commission Chairwoman Mary Frances Berry is carrying on like a banshee after President Bush attempted to fill a vacancy on the commission with a conservative black. On Friday Berry refused to seat Bush nominee Peter Kirsanow, in an episode that has many questioning whether she herself should be bounced as chairwoman. "Berry has made no secret of her dislike and distaste for President Bush in particular and conservatives in general," Martin reminded NewsMax.com earlier in the day. "She jumped at the chance to smear the Bush brothers as cheating blacks in Florida out of their votes and costing Al Gore the White House," he noted. Berry has also directed venomous attacks at the likes of Sen. Strom Thurmond (D-Sc), announcing earlier this year that she couldn't wait for the Southern nonagenerian to die before Vermont Sen. Jim Jeffords' decision to bolt the GOP handed Senate control to the Democrats. Add that to Berry's comment in the 1980's, when she once argued, "Civil rights laws were not passed to protect the rights of white men and do not apply to them." Martin also noted that Kisanow's appointment would give Republicans on the commission equal representation for the first time in years. That would threaten Berry's control of the commission, the Project 21 leader said, denying her the chance to continue "playing to the black vote through outrage rather than true racial progress." "Black liberals are worried that, as President Bush appoints more blacks to important positions within his administration, the smaller their circle will get," he added.

Berry even refuses to acknowledge when her term expires. Clinton did not formally re-appoint her until January 1999 (even though her term expired in December 1998) and she has recently claimed that her current term won't really expire until January 2005, when she hopes there will be a Democrat in office to re-appoint her again.

She'll probably decide her term expires some other time then.

Well her appointment is in the presidential records; my guess is she'll have to go to court too.

There was a poll just two or three days ago showing that blacks overwhelmingly support president Bush.

This is news to me (very good news, indeed). What polls?

Sorry. I could not remember the source. I rtied to do a key word search on FR, because I believe I read here. It could possibly have been on DRUDGE. It definitely was on one or the other. As I recall, those who approved of his handling of the war were in the high sixties, and there were a sizable number who just "didn't know", so those opposing him were very low.
