But an in-depth look at the reasons why so many western Europeans were supporters of the Third Reich would be an enlightening exercise.

The exercise has been done many times in many books. The conclusions are usually rooted in the anti-Semitism preached in the churches of these countries that preach that the Jews killed Jesus. It's not hard to figure out why a population would hate a group that they feel responsible for the murder of their Savior.

Combine that with the Jews' tendency to not assimilate and you have a convenient scapegoat when economies go South.
