Nov. 12. issue - After a three-week, 15-country tour, Hugo Chavez returned home last month to a rapturous reception from tens of thousands of cheering supporters. At least, that's how the Venezuelan president seems to have perceived what others saw as a collective yawn from his countrymen. Not long ago, Chavez really could draw huge crowds and entrance them with his promises of revolutionary change. Nowadays, the stirring rhetoric and histrionics no longer work their magic. The 100,000 to 200,000 supporters his party organizers promised for a welcome-home rally were conspicuous by their absence. Despite the free buses laid on from all over the nation, no more than a few thousand die-hard followers and the odd passerby showed up.

*****FREE OTTO[Excerpt]While the eyes of the world focus on the Middle East, the war on terror has its targets in this hemisphere, too. Unfortunately, President Bush's designated envoy to the Americas must fight this country's shadowy enemies with both hands tied behind his back. Otto Reich, Bush's nominee for assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs, is being held hostage by Sen. Christopher Dodd (D., Conn.) who refuses to hold a confirmation hearing on Reich's candidacy. Dodd apparently would rather brood over Reich's performance in the Reagan administration than permit him to address these clear-and-present dangers today:[End Excerpt]

Chavez is a Communist. He is late to the game and cannot identify himself with a broader worldwide Communist coalition.

But his heros are egomaniacs like Castro, Ortega and Guevara.

If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly while expecting a different outcome, then Chavez is insane.

In any event, he is a dangerous character whom the world would be better off without.

Since socialism is a disease, than adherence to its extreme form, communism, is a psychopathology.

Hugo Chavez's mental state is
something Jiang Zemin and every anti-American he's
made overtures to, would love to take advantage of.

[Excerpt] "Venezuela. Hugo Chavez, the increasingly erratic president of this key U.S. oil supplier, has declared himself "a Maoist" and befriended pro-terrorist dictators. A Caracas-based, anti-Chavez group called the National Emergency Coalition published a veritable Chavez photo album in the September 25 Washington Times. In one picture, Chavez rides in Saddam Hussein's Mercedes with the Iraqi thug at the wheel. During an August 2000 visit, Chavez called Iraq "a model" for Venezuela.

In another snapshot, Chavez hugs Iranian President Mohammed Khatami and says, "We have sister revolutions with equal struggles and the same destiny." Elsewhere, Chavez embraces Muammar Qaddafi and calls Libya "a model of participatory democracy." Chavez greets Fidel Castro as well and says that Cuba and Venezuela are "swimming together toward the same sea of happiness."

Chavez also appears to be arming Colombia's Marxist FARC rebels. Colombian defense officials say that between January 1998 and July 2000, they captured 470 clandestine FAL rifles stamped with the insignias of Venezuela's military and its arms manufacturers." [End Excerpt]---Source

This makes me wonder whether he has a collection of scantily clad women and bullfighting scenes painted on velvet in his office like the guy in "The Inlaws"

Heh. Fidels all. Something tells me that the area will have a distinctly Islamic flavour to it before long, and then America has another Jihad-loving oil supplier.

(November 28, 2001)-- Chávez defies protests of his economic policies-"I dare them to have that strike…" [Excerpt] CARACAS -- President Hugo Chávez dared Venezuela's largest business federation Tuesday to proceed with a one-day strike to protest his economic policies, saying his government's popularity would win the day.

``I dare them to have that strike. We will see who has more strength, [business] or the sovereign people,'' Chávez said while inaugurating a transportation law. ``I'm the head of state. You're not going to put me against the wall; you're not going to blackmail me.'' [End Excerpt]

Well really the average person (not these self styled generalissimos like Chavez and Castro) in Latin America is deeply Christian and the area is unlikely to ever convert to Islam. Chavez's embrace of Khatami, Khadaffy, Hussein (who all hate each others guts BTW) is no different from radical chic liberals who embraced the PLO in the 70's, without any idea of what Islamic fundamentalism really represents.

Yep. But he'll get the idea soon enough, when they reach critical mass and start demanding sharia law...
